Warning labels in cigarette packs: what are they for?

Warning: Smoking is dangerous to your health. Warning: Smoking Kills Is this supposed to be to scare smokers (not effective though)? Were they printed to lessen the guilt of the manufacturers? When a person dies of smoking, they will not feel guilty because they have warned people already? It's just like saying "Don't blame me, I've already told you"
Do you think they are good deterrents?

Interesting view! I think you may be on to something.
As a smoker, the warnings do not deter me. Maybe they deter potential smokers.
