Have you ever given a pet away? |

| Most you know I owned three miniature pinschers. Well, when I was off line I was forced to give the last one I was given up. My sister in law took him to the humane shelter for me. For some reason 'Chevy' did not seem to like or get along with my teen. Earlier New Year morning, Chevy attacked my son for no reason. My son was laying on the couch trying to go to sleep. When all of a sudden Chevy jumped up and bit him as he layed there. I won't even mention where he bit my son at. But I am sure you can guess. My son now is going through a series of rabie shots and been to the emergency room twice because of it. I have only had this dog for a few months and didn't know its history at all. Except it was an unaltered male who barked and growled at everyone. The previous owner only told me he was taught to be protective and now they didn't know how to handle him. I have taken in miniature pinschers before with this same problem. But have never had one attack my son or the other animals in my house. It broke my heart but I knew it was for the best for everyone in my household. Have you ever given a pet away? If so why? | | | | | |

| | we gave away a puppy because we had 3 kids at the time plus this puppy that we thought we would have time for but we didn't, this dog had a bad case of worms and was crapping all over the place, even after he was treated for them, we just couldn't deal with it anymore,we gave him to someone who had a farm and he ended up being a sheep dog and got really big, i guess things worked out for the best though | | | | | | |

| | well, things do happen for a reason. you gave him away not because you don't love him but because you have to. and now, the dog's having a great life in that farm. so, mostly, the dog's even thankful for what you've done. | | | |

| | As a child, yes. We had a cocker spaniel when I was quite young and had a similar situation to yours. I was sitting in a living room chair, with my parents on the nearby couch, and we were watching tv. The dog was on the floor next to my chair. I apparently had arm hanging down a bit over the arm of the chair. Totally unprompted, the dog jumped up and wrapped his teeth around my hand, biting into it on each side. My dad FREAKED ... more out of fear, I'm sure, and because I was so young at the time. He pulled the dog off me and took him to the basement. The next day, he took the dog away :( I was so little that no one told me where he went. | | | | | | |

| | I bet your dad did freak out. I know I did when my son was bit. After I had given him away. I found out he had bit another male person that was over at my house. But noone had said anything. Because the person had been teasing the dog to begin with. | | | |

| | Yes we raised a chow from a pup. He was the best dog ever. He always walked the kids to the bus and waited on them to get off (kind of like forrest gump lol). He was a good protector and watch dog. One day my mother was visiting and he was not use to her because she don't visit much but anyhow she was feeding him some scraps and he turned his plate over, She reached down to turn it back up and he bit her on the arm. We had to get rid of him after that. Its been 3 yrs. and we still miss him very much. His name was Kudo. | | | | | | |

| | Did you send him to the shelter or have him destroyed? Was your mother adamant that you had to get rid of him, or did the impetus come from you? | | | |

| | No, not yet. I'm fortunate to have had good pets so far. We have a dog now. She's very good with my little one and has very good house manners. I would give a pet away only if they are aggresive like in your situation. I'd rather be safe than sorry. | | | | | | |

| | Sorry that you had to give up a pet. But, sometimes it has to happen. My friends that had the dog that I posted about not long ago, finally found a good home for the dog. It was necessary. She bit their son on the ear. | | | | | | |

| | As an adult, I've only ever had two pets and they are both with me - I couldn't imagine not having them with me. Family pets when we were younger had to rehomed a couple times. The one I remember the most is an Afghan hound named Baron. My brother loved this dog to pieces but he had some issues and bit both of my brothers on the face, to the point where stitches were required for the younger one. After that, he was rehomed. I'm not sure what happened to him, though allegedly the story is that he was given to a couple with no children. We had a few others, too, that were given away - 2 dogs and a cat. Not sure what happened to them, either. | | | | | | |

| | Sorry to hear about that. I guess it's 50/50. 50% is what type of dog you have and 50% is the dog's temperment. Some type of dogs are aggressive by nature and others eventhough they're not the hostile type, they tend to be because of upbringing. I had to give up my cousin's dobberman and rott because they were to aggressive for me eventhough they lived with me for almost 2 years. I gave them back to my cousin. I guess the original master is still the best. I also have a male dalmatian which was given to us when he was a pup but he has this wild attitude and when you want to pet him he'll start biting your hand eventhough he thinks he's just playing. I takes a lotta disciplining to have that dalmatian under control. | | | | | | |
