San Francisco Mayor Apologizes For Affair |
|
San Fransisco Mayor Gavin Newsom apologized Thursday for having a sexual relationship with his former campaign manager's wife. "I'm deeply sorry," Newsom said during a brief news conference at City Hall the day after the aide resigned. Newsom appeared poised but visibly emotional. He spoke for about a minute and left without taking questions.
Mr. Newsom is not going to step down even though he cheated on his wife with his aide's wife.
My question is this. Do you think he should step down or is this sleasy behavior just a sign of our times and he should remain mayor of San Francisco?

Most of the time they continue to do so until caught thinking nothing wrong of it even. Even though, I as a Christian do not condone affairs, I still feel that a person can be in office, and do a Good job. Look at the Case of Bill Clinton when he was President. Even with his affair with Monica, what he did for the USA as a whole made a lot more impression in my opinion than anything Bush ever did.

cyntrow (2699) | 3 years ago | There are a lot of religious people who have affairs, they just do a better job at covering it up. Then, if they do get caught, they pull a Jimmy Swaggart and cry on television. A person doesn't have to be religious to be moral.

2. cyntrow (2699) | 3 years ago | I'm sick of hearing about what all these politicians are doing in their bedrooms, or in seedy motel rooms, as the case may be. In my opinion, the only people he needed to apologize to are his wife, and his campaign manager. And he needs to kiss his wife's butt for all eternity. No, in this world, you don't need to resign unless the person you are screwing around with is of your same gender.

How could she ever trust him again?

cyntrow (2699) | 3 years ago | I agree. He needs to apologize to his wife and to his campaign manager, a who placed trust in him. My problem, I guess, is that I don't want to know about it. I don't need to be apologized to for it. I so pity his wife. I hope she leaves him, like hilary should have done with Bill. Maybe if she Had, I'd respect her more.

3. Carrie26 (1086) | 3 years ago | I think that sometimes people like the media for one like to make big deals about people having affairs.Look even at the celebrities who are published on papers fo having affairs.Heck even remember Bill CLinton with Monica Lewinsky and that was made into a big deal.I feel it isnt like they are the only ones that do it.I for one feel it is worng to have an affair on you husband or wife but people make mistakes.Just as long as they dont repeat it.The thing is a normal person can go out and cheat on thier spouse and they are publicized about it or the media isnt in the front yard of thier house to catch them to ask them questions about thier affair on the other person.I think people should mind their own business.I am not being mean about it.But the media and the news know other people probably do it too but are not famous or a Mayor or President. So much is watched when your famous,President, mayor ect.Bill Clinton continued his term. The thing is this stuff goes on probably alot and the only people that its made into a big deal about is the famous,or really known people like the President,Mayor, ect. The news coverage, media and Star Inquirer ect. is making lots of money off of these people.I dont think that people should have affairs I for one think it is wrong and you can overcome it to make it not happen but people can slip sometimes.I thin they shouldlearn from thier mistakes and not do it again if they happened to do it.But to have someone in office that will continue to do it and influence other people then I think they should step down. But like my husband pointed out that Ronlad Regan had an affair as well as JOn F. Kennedy and numerous of other people. But they were good leaders it was just maybe that was there weak point and they needed to work more on that to keep it fom happening.Hopefully you can understand what I am saying.LOL.I think I was rambling.

gifana (2250) | 3 years ago | There were two other affairs by presidents.....JFK and FDR. However, both were discreet and the media left them alone. In FDR's case it was his secretary....Eleanor knew about it but kept up appearances for his sake. The press made "mention" of it while he was alive but protected Eleanor and the country in not letting it become a full scale scandal. Americans knew about it but also didn't raise a raucous either. JFK was well known for his philandering but Big Joe either paid off the newspapers or the journalists themselves laid off him.
I still feel that Clinton's "activities" with Monica were his own affair. However, I think he should have been more discreet, like JFK, and kept his activities out of the White House Oval Office. It wasn't the affair that ticked me off with Clinton but rather the fact that he lied to a Grand Jury under oath which is a crime and he should have paid for it....even if the sentence was suspended.

4. LittleMel (6484) | 3 years ago | I read this too sometime ago. I think it's sad how someone could do this to his devoted employee. He might be a good politician, but if he can cheat on his wife, do you think he won't cheat on his country? I don't remember reading anything about his wife, but even if he's single, he shouldn't do that

5. gifana (2250) | 3 years ago | How can we on the outside try to point a finger when we do not know all the facts. Who's to say that he wasn't getting enough at home because of headaches and the like or that she was getting a little on the side as well. I would be hard put to continue having confidence in someone who would be so stupid to fool around and then get caught. Apologies are so trite after the fact. Saying that you're sorry in public is just another piece of marketing when you're in the public's eye all the time. Just because one says they are sorry doesn't mean that they meant it.....we are all good actors when pressed to be so. I feel that anyone is free to screw up their life in any way they want but in this case and others like it they should not count on my vote for dog catcher. PS: I still think Bill Clinton should have gone to trial for perjury and been sentenced....with of course a suspended sentence, community service and visits to the parole officer just like any other citizen of the US who has been caught lying under oath. And you are right, I would have more respect for Hillary had she divorced him....it would have made history....the first divorce in the white house. That's what they both want/wanted.....to make history.

6. urbangirl (980) | 3 years ago | I am looking forward to the day when a politician announces - hey I regret having an affair because I have been found out and look what it's doing to my career and family now...but at the time I enjoyed it immensely and it satisfied my lusty urges. That's when you know you've got a "kind of" honest politician on your hands. Let's face it though, a person who sleeps with his campaign manager's wife can't really be trusted.

lloydanthony111 (1178) | 3 years ago | I'd also would like to hear a politician be up front about why he cheated. That would be refreshing in a way.

7. strykerhouse (139) | 3 years ago | I disagree that the public should mine their own business when it involves public officals. Especially ELECTED officals. Before I start let me say I'm not a religous fanatic. However I do beleive our country's elected officals should be ABOVE reproach when it comes to their behavior. As a man, to overcome our doggy insticts is a true strength of character. The behavior should be to RESPECT your spouse because you made a commitment to forsake all others in your marriage vows. If you can't keep a commitment to the one you love, to honor your spouse, how in the world can you keep a commitment to your country? Unfortunately, I also believe the reason our moral behavior in this country is so bad is the people our kids see doing this sort of thing and figure it's ok. Again people in the public eye should be held accountable to the highest standards. Lead by example. Yes, we all make mistakes in life, and people should be forgiven by the one's they hurt. Should he step down, no, he should be thrown out on his butt and barred from public office. If you deceive your spouse, YOU WILL DECIEVE THE PUBLIC.

9. fpd1955 (1286) | 3 years ago | From what I read, he claims he is in a 12 step program and is making amends. He said his alcoholism was the cause of his adultery. Granted, alcoholism is an illness, but would someone with a mental illness be allowed to hold the office of Mayor? Alcohol distorts the thinking process. I would worry that he was making serious decisions while under the influence. I would yhink the city would try to impeach him as Mayor. He has yet to be in recovery long enough to be certain he has kicked this habit or recovered from this disease.

10. mtdewgurl74 (10311) | 3 years ago | Well these things happen to people even if they are the Mayor but him being the mayor sh should have known better because they are always in the publics eye and bound to get found out at one point or another which is what happened. I don't think he should step down just because he made a bad judgement to sleep with someone other than his wife. But I do think if he does it again he shows that he can't be trusted and would then need to step down from office. But you can't crusify him over one mistake. He has shown to be a good mayor besides that incident so lets give him one more chance because he probably is already beating himself up over what he did and probably will be more careful the next time and maybe second guess a bad dicision.
