Neil Gaiman, anyone? | | I adore his novels. From Coraline, which is a children's book, to Stardust, to Neverwhere, and Anansi Boys, every one of his novels just grab a hold of me and they don't let go until I've finished it.
I think I have a condition whereby when I get a book I really like, I don't put it down until I've finished it. I'm sure a lot of other people have that too, but for me, I get a little depressed when I see that I'm nearing the end of the book because that means that I won't get to find out any more about any of the characters in the book. It's very silly, but that's why I think I am prone to get hooked to series, such as the Chronicles of Narnia (which has 7 books) as well as the Harry Potter series, closing in on 7 books as well.
Does anybody here share my condition?:)

He's a brilliant, funny, sweet, wonderful man and I absolutely love him, but I just can't get into his writing. I've read Neverwhere, Stardust, American Gods, and most of his short stories. I love The Sandman graphic novels and I have a beautiful illustrated novella that was a collaboration between him and Yoshitaka Amano, but I just can't get into his books. Something about his writing style jars me.
But I do like him very much, and I have a lot of respect and affection for him.

| janjabu (71) | 3 years ago | I haven't read any of his graphic novels, although I have read Violent Cases and I did enjoy it. I would like to try The Sandman novels sometime though. What is the book called, the one he did with Yoshitaka Amano? You describe it as a "beautiful illustrated novella" and I must say, my curiosity is aroused.:)

| | 2. unusualsuspect (2413) | 3 years ago | I read American Gods recently, and liked it. That's the only one of his books I've read so far, but I have Neverwhere and Mirrormask on DVD. I love both of them. For some reason, I prefer movie fantasy to reading it, but I do plan to read more of Gaiman's books. I really enjoyed the interviews with him, and his discussions on the movie discs.

| janjabu (71) | 3 years ago | I'm sorry, did you say you had NEVERWHERE on DVD? I've only seen Mirrormask on DVD, and I didn't even know there was Neverwhere as well. I'm currently re-reading that one for the nth time! Where did you get it? Is it available online?

| | 3. JJLoa44 (281) | 3 years ago | I am a huge Neil Gaiman fan! Both his novels and his graphic novels as well. I have a good collection with more to come I am sure. I also read his blog online at his official site (or you can get the feed on various blogging programs) which is quite interesting - notes from Neil himself!
If you are a fan of stardust, I highly recommend getting ahold of the graphic novel version of it - the illustrations are gorgeous and work so well with his words!
I personally can't wait for the stardust movie as well. Should be great!

| janjabu (71) | 3 years ago | I know! I can't wait, myself. And I will definitely look for the graphic novel version, you've got me interested, that's for sure. Neil Gaiman came to Manila last 2004 or late 2005 but sadly I wasn't able to join the loooong line to have him sign any books. Too sad, I know. Next time (if there is a next time), I will surely line up!

| | 4. Withoutwings (4690) | 3 years ago | I love Neil Gaiman. I first became interested in him through Tori Amos (one of his Sandman characters is based on her). After reading the Sandman graphic novels time lapsed... Once I discovered he wrote books too, I've read Stardust and Anansi boys. I have American Gods and one other book at home to be read, and am part of bookrings on www.bookcrossing.com for most of the other books he has written.

| janjabu (71) | 3 years ago | Really? I should really get started on his graphic novels. I like Tori Amos as well. Isn't Stardust great? I can't wait for the movie to come out.

| | 5. craving4more (203) | 3 years ago | I was introduced to works by Neil Gaiman by my brother, who may have read some of his graphic novels before relentltessly asking me to buy a copy. We got started with American Gods, weren't able to put the book down 'till we finished it.Now, we're both trying to complete our collection of all his works so far.
| |
| |
|
|
| janjabu (71) | 3 years ago | That's so true. I myself couldn't put down American Gods once I started it. Well, it's basically the same for me with any of his books, anyway. Lucky your brother didn't relent, eh? Have you read Stardust? I can't wait for the movie.

craving4more (203) | 3 years ago | I wouldn't worry about him relenting, seems like when he started to enjoy reading his hunger for the written word become more insatiable than mine.=p Right after we were through with American Gods, we hounded the bookstores for more Neil Gaiman--Stardust, Neverwhere, though, we haven't yet gotten a copy of his graphic novels especially the earlier works--Coraline, How I swapped my Dad...Also looking forward for the movie versions.

| janjabu (71) | 3 years ago | I just got two new books, Smoke and Mirrors, and Fragile Things. Smoke and Mirrors stories are really cool, and so Neil Gaiman. Naturally. And I found an illustrated version of Stardust in Singapore. I've started to reread the book again, and it feels great to be taken back to Wall once more!
| |
|
|
craving4more (203) | 3 years ago | Smoke and Mirrors is the collection of short stories that he's collaborated with another editor, right? I just may get a copy of that one of these days. An illustrated version of Stardust? That's great! Saw a copy of that one too in a bookstore once, pretty hefty for me right now. Maybe if I could have spare money one of these days, I'll go on a Neil Gaiman book spree.^_^ Enjoy your adventures beyond the Wall.
