Can you give me tips on how to speak english well? Like americans do? |
|
I'm a Filipino.. and I know it will be good for me to be able to speak american english well.. since everybody can understand english. I have problems pronouncing words that starts with "TH". (e.g. three, through, thought). Somebody told me that I have to put out my tongue a little bit to be able to pronounce it correctly. I've been reading english books, watching english movies, i even record my voice on my pc, but i still sound very Filipino, not American. What's the key?

The TH sound may be a bit hard in the beginning but it will take time. When making the TH sound put your toungue on the top of your teeth. I'm not sure if that helps but it should help a bit. Just keep practicing though. If you have been in philippines for awhile or just have used the language more then english then don't worry too much.

4. funny52f (5157) | 2 years ago | Hi! I'm also Filipino like you but I do not have any problem pronouncing words in English. In fact my son, who works at a Call Center as Accent Trainer, speaks English like a native. Whenever he met native speakers of English he is often asked from what state he comes from. They couldn't believe he is a Filipino because of how well he speaks English. The key is PRACTICE, practice, practice. If you want to speak English like a native speaker, then practice doing it the way Americans do. Watch shows or movies and observe how English is spoken. My son watches Oprah Winfrey's shows a lot. So basically, it's practice speaking it the American way and constantly exposing or training your ears to listen to real native speakers on television and movies.

| bebeyoliva (73) | 2 years ago | Tnx! I've undergone english communications training already at a call center.. actually i'm on the floor now, but when things get complicated, and i need to explain something or give directions.. it takes me some time to construct sentences.. and I sometimes lose my american accent.. anyways... Practice, practice, practice..as you say. Thanks man!

Bottomline is, if you're understood, that's fine. I'm Afrikaans, and my attitude regarding English is that I'll do my best, but it is after all my second language.

wraithstriderwife (491) | 1 year ago | americans are good in accent of course, but when it comes to grammar, filipinos are better... that's a fact.

7. cerebralassassin (110) | 1 year ago | Do you work in a call center?? I'm from Bombay, India & i too work in a call center. What is the best place to improve your English & your accent than practice. I too sounded very "Indian" in the beginning but now my customers cannot make out whom they are speaking to.... You too have patience, your accent will definitely improve. For the "TH" words, you are using the correct methods but rather recording your voice...try speaking aloud in front of the mirror...

| bebeyoliva (73) | 1 year ago | Really, good for you! I heard that Indians have thicker accent than Filipinos. It's nice to know that foreigners can hardly recognize that you're not from the US!

cerebralassassin (110) | 1 year ago | Yeah it took me around 15 months to improve my English, yes we Indians have a very heavy accent....but practice makes man perfect, doesn't it??
| |
|
|
| bebeyoliva (73) | 1 year ago | yeah, but do you wish you were an American instead of Indian? Life in america is pretty good!

cerebralassassin (110) | 1 year ago | Yea sometimes i do wish so..they have such a good lifestyle. But we should remember that we're, in now way behind them. Your country & mine are the world leaders in the BPO segment. Besides our English is Better that theirs. The don't speak correct English, their grammar is so bad....."I dont want nothin'" Hehe......but i like their work environment.

8. cloudwatcher (2280) | 1 year ago | We have a saying "practice makes perfect" so keep on practicing. To make the TH sound, place your tongue under and against your upper front teeth and blow. Don't try saying a word, just blow, making a long ttttthhhhhh sound. Keep doing this while you are working, watching TV etc. Do this for hours and then try saying the th words. You'll most like ly do it automatically. There is nothing wrong with sounding Filipino, but there is nothing wrong, either, with sounding Filipino in English.

| bebeyoliva (73) | 1 year ago | Yeah, i practice the TH sound everyday... I think I'm getting used to it... youre right, just blow and give it an extra puff of air! thanks!

9. djdguy (2330) | 1 year ago | Bro its just a matter of serious practice with correct training of course. Why not enrol to an english speaking subject or hire for a tutor. You can also do some listening to cds containing some trainings on speaking the language well. These will surely help you alot. It only needs determination and constant practice. Well gud luck kapatid!

10. mihimolly (4890) | 1 year ago | Lots of English children have a problem with the 'th' sound and often you hear small children saying 'fick and fin' instead of 'thick and thin'. In school we had practice to say it right and the teachers used to say, 'the tip of the tongue, between the teeth', which we had to repeat as a practice sentence. Another sentence I remember for practicing it was... 'Thirty three thrushes, flew through the window'. another is Red leather, yellow leather said over and over. fot the T sound by itself try... 'Betty bought some butter, but the butter betty bought was bitter,so betty bought some better butter, better than the bitter butter, betty bought before.'
