I'm a cheap car owner and proud of it. I know many of my friends prefer high end cars and would not drive a cheap car. How do you feel about this? I just don't want all the debt, for me, I would rather spend my money on something else than an expensive car.

I have a '98 Dodge Neon that I paid about $5,000 for, I love driving it, and it's cute. :) I also have a Chevrolet Camaro that I paid well, much more for :) I drive both equally, there's sometimes I won't want to drive my Camaro like when it's really icy or muddy, but I don't mind driving my Neon in those conditions. I agree about the debt, both of my cars are paid for, we also have 2 trucks and Jeep and a box truck (like a Uhaul, for work) all of them are paid off. I am now needing to go get an SUV, but don't want the payment... we have money for it, it's just there is other stuff I'd like to do instead :) Been too long without payments, the last 3 vehicles we paid cash for.

Well, I am not a "car as a status symbol" thing, so no! Living in London, I don't really need one for day-to-day use, the tube is quicker and cheaper, so I only use it ocasionally at weekends for the weely shop, or to visit friends, but that is about all. My car is not cheap, but not expensive either - I have already had it 5 years, and I don't intend to chanhe it for at least another 5!

I am joining your cheap car club - as my car is now 11 years old and still going!!! I don't have any problem driving a cheapo as long as it's running. I know so many people who feel like if they are driving one of those high end cars - that they will get noticed more or they think that people will think they are so cool for being able to get a high end car. As for me - that's so not important!!! I like you would much rather spend my dough on other things in life that are much more important than being in debt trying to pay off an expensive car forever!!!!

Ok, you're in the club. I like the attitude you have about this. I don't mind the expensive cars, but they are just not for me. I would rather spend my money on my pet care, or a trip or maybe some new clothes, or books!

That's great, it is great that you can have a "back up" car! $200 for a car is a sweet deal as long as it is reliable.

No, me and my husband don't mind at all driving a cheap car. Just like you, I had pressured my husband not to take brand-new expensive cars from the car dealers and have to pay the monthly installments in the banks. I don't want to put a big headache on our head thinking all the time about deadlines and dues. Maybe when we'll be financially able to purchase a car on cash, I'll consider the idea of a luxurious car.

I have a cheap car and I don't mind driving it because it has a good engine and transmission, it's a 1987 crown victoria and it need paint job. I might get another car, used one, next year, if God wills.

Oh our car is definately not new, although in the past we have had new cars and this is in fact our first not brand new vehicle we have bought. Our circumstances are slightly different now though as we are retired and certainly don't need a huge debt to pay every month. So, we look after our old car and it gets us where we want to go and on time too. We do a lot of travelling, as much as our money will allow, so the time will come when we might have to consider another vehicle. In the meantime, we are putting a little bit of money away each fortnight and just saving it till we need it. I do think however when the time comes to replace the current vehicle we will look at a new or near new car. The reason is that we will want it to last as long as possibly and if we want to continue seeing our country, then it has to be reliable. I think that you have made a wise decision to buy the best car you can afford without going into debt. That makes sense to me, and at least if your situation was to change then you won't have this massive debt hanging over your heads. This is our thinking too Geminigirl, which is why I say we are now saving for the day when we will need to replace our vehicle. :) Have you ever noticed that the people who have these high end things, i.e. high cost, are no happier than you are and often less happy. The reason is that they have this massive debt hanging over their head and you do not.

I agree. Worrying about debt can keep me up at night, and I sure don't like that feeling. Thanks for the post!

The name or brand of the car I drive does not matter to me in the least. As long as my car is in good, working order, I am a happy camper. I've driven chevettes, citations, cavaliers, ranger, windstars, F150s, contours, you name it. As long as it runs and is safe to drive, it's a worthwhile means of transportation to me.

I don't mind driving a cheap car. As long as it runs fine and gets me where I need to be then that's fine. Like you I'd rather spend my money on something else. Spending it on my family to be exact.

Yes, that's how I feel. As long as it runs well, and gets me where I need to be and I can rely on it, then I am happy.

I also drive a cheap and I'm proud of it as well! My car is 8 years old and as its been well looked after it's just as good as a brand new car. It's perfectly reliable and still lokks good. There are much better things to spend your money on!

I love cheap cars! It makes no sense to me to pay alot for a vehicle that is just gonna depreciate so fast it makes your head spin! As long as my vehicle is dependable because I don't want to be stuck on the side of the road, I don't care what kind it is. I know how you feel too, about the debt, etc., because I have a daughter, and I need to be saving for her college, rather than spending all my money on a vehicle that I think might impress someone. My friends are bad about having to have an expensive car too. Then they have to have their parents clothe and feed them and their children. I'd rather have my self-sufficience than have a lot of expensive stuff!
