Treatment of veterans what do you think? |
| |
| Everyone knows that the US Veterans who fought in Viet Nam were treated badly when they returned home. This morning I watched an old black and white movie about World War 2 veterans who went through the same thing. I never watch old black and white movies but this had me interested. They went through the usual problems of not being able to get work and had to settle for work in drug stores and junk yards even though they had prestiges jobs before joining the service. People would start arguments with them about the US fighting overseas. One man had lost both of his hands and a lot of people told him he lost them for nothing. My ex husband was a Viet Nam vet and I know first hand how they were treated and it definately wasn't with a big welcome home parade. What are your feelings on US Veterans and they way they are treated? Do you have any experiences with it? | | Peace Symbol of the 60's | | | | |

| | My father was a World War II veteran and there's nothing much we could say about it, compensation wise. He used to be a high ranking officer then and headed the veterans organization in Mindanao, Philippines. He did not get the compensation due him because it was quite unclear how to go about it. He died in 1986 without having tasted at all the fruits due to a veteran. All of us, surviving 6 children, feels that the US is not really honest as regards compensating the war veterans because if they are, they should have organized a method wherein the war veterans will surely get their due. | | | | | | |

| | My granddad was in the first world war .. he fought on the Somme, Paschaendale, Ypres and all those other horrendous places ... he would never talk about it .. it was probably too horrific to even want to remember .. and in 1918 when the war was over the men were pretty much just drafted back into work without so much as a thank you ... many suffered with shell shock (now known as post traumatic shock), many of the men had horrendous nightmares (as did my granddad) .. and many had lifelong medical problems .. as did my granddad .. but he never ever asked for help and none was ever offered ! | | | |

| | While I haven't had any personal experiences with it, I'm in the age group where almost all of my male classmates did their time in Viet Nam. I agree that they were treated terribly for being in a war that they didn't have any choice over. My Dad was in WWII and Korea. While there was public rejoicing when they came home, it wasn't until after they were home that I believe they were treated somewhat as second class citizens; with the Nam era veterans, there wasn't even public rejoicing at their return! Also, I always thought that the places they worked for before going off to the service were supposed to hire them back, it's sad that that wasn't true. I can only hope those who have gone to fight nowadays are not treated as poorly as in times past. | | | | | | |

| | I don't think any veterans of any war have been treated as well as they deserve when they come home after a war is finished .. no matter who has 'won' !! Realistically we send all these men (and women too nowadays) .. off to other countries to kill and maim others .. and be killed and maimed in return .. they get good training to go and do this .. but rarely if ever do they get retrained 'not to kill' when they end their days as a service person ... I have never been in the forces .. so I have never had to contemplate the awful thought of having to kill or be killed .. so I simply can't even begin to understand the difficulties that some folks who have seen very active service must be going through when they become a civilian again .. One of my jobs was as a quality auditor .. I haven't worked for 14 years now .. but I STILL find myself assessing quality of products, services just as I would have done when I was working .. so for folks in the forces it must be the same thing .. part of their forces life is always carried with them wherever they go .. how do you readjust to civilian life without a lot of help from the various government agencies .. But how do we help these folks to readjust .. is a parade the answer ?? Probably not as surely we shouldn't really be lauding folks who have been killing others day in and day out, but shouldn't we at least be able to thank them in some way for putting their lives on the line to save our lifestyles ... No matter how you look at it I feel it will be the wrong thing to do .. because in any war there is at least two sides .. and the last thing anyone wants is to feel in anyway they are whooping it up while some other countries men folks are returning in 'defeat' .. but we just can't have winners without losers can we .. and sadly it's usually the 'ordinary folks' who are the losers ... whatever side they were on .. | | | | | | |

| | Our treatment of veterans is shameful. These men and women risked life and limb for us and we are quick to forget their sacrifice. Congress is no better since they control the purse strings only give lip service to the veterans. They are quick to stand next to a vet when they are running for election but not in funding benefits for him. Bush is even worse since he cut funding for veterans. At least the vets after WWII got the G.I. bill. The latest veterans get very little and have to fight for what they can get. It is shameful!! | | | | | | |
