Have you ever taken underwater photos?

I've taken a few before when snorkeling in Hawaii, but only with a disposable camera. I was somewhat disappointed with the difficulty of using a film camera underwater. But I would love to take more underwater photos just in a pool sometime. So I got underwater housing for my Nikon CoolPix S5. The problem is, the pool water is currently around 40 to 50 degrees! But I'm just dying to go in and take some photos. At least I will be trying out the underwater housing for the camera soon, when I go whale watching. So do you like underwater photography? Is it easier with a digital camera because you can use the screen instead of trying to look through a viewfinder?

Yups i have taken pics underwater already and i really like it. Im using a sony cybershot dsc-w50 and its nice because it has accessories for underwater picure taking but its quite expensive but i like it.

That is cool. The Nikon CoolPix S5 wasn't expensive because it came as a package deal. It was $400 I think for the camera and the underwater housing. I thought it was a pretty good deal. Did your underwater digital photos come out pretty good? My film ones were so grainy, but maybe that was because it wasn't clear water either.

I think it would be facinating to take underwater shots. Like you I took some with a disposable camera. They're so limiting. But I rarely am near the ocean so it'll be a while before I invest in underwater housing :( If I was going to go do something like whale watching (which sounds like a lot of fun) then purphase I'd invest in it then.

Yeah, I really only invested in it because I have a pool so I figured it would be kind of fun. I'm near the ocean pretty much every week, but our beaches are horribly polluted and many you can't even swim in. Even for whale watching, normally I would have bought a film disposable, but I figure since I already bought this, I should make use of it. I actually had saved up for and bought this camera at the end of last summer. But due to receiving a broken camera initially and waiting, it got cold before I could go swimming and try this out. So I'm still awaiting some opportunity. I think whale watching would be perfect.

That sucks about the beaches being so polluted. I love looking at the ocean but I also love being in it too.

i'm a licensed Scuba diver,..and i would love to take underwater photos. It is just amazing. Bring trying to bring those memories back (capture in the photo), but unfortunately the equipment is still very expensive - beyond my budget. The underwater casing, arm and strobe is about 3 times the camera price...I am referring to DSLR casing. Well, hope i can accummulate enough fund to get my first set,..but before that, I'll need to practice hard on my bouyancy control !

Wow, I didn't even realize they had DSLR casing. And I'd bet it gets far more expensive for scuba diving because it has to withstand more pressure. Mine can only go 6 feet deep max, and is for a point and shoot. I'm still saving up for a DSLR myself. I want to get the Nikon D80.

Try a heated pool. I always seem to screw up when I take underwater pictures. They never seem to come out right yet I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Anyway, I would love underwater photography if I could do it:)

We can't afford to heat the pool up from 40 degrees. The coldest I've gone in before was when it got to 56. But I'd prefer at least 65, which would be very expensive. Do you take underwater photos with film or digital? I figured the nice thing with digital is, at least if a lot of the photos don't come out, it didn't cost me in developing fees. I'm not really sure how I'm going to hold the camera steady underwater. I'm not even a good swimmer really. But I think it will be fun.
