My little dog gets fleas even though there are none in the house but he rips his hair out, I put advantage on him but when i give him a bath a week or so later it seems it stops working, he is a lap dog so I give him a bath every week so he doesn't smell like a dog. So any ideas, i have tried collars, soaps and sprays

Hi there...fleas have a long cycle of life so even though you may not be seeing any adult fleas in the home the flea larvae (eggs) could be living in the carpeting and furnishings hatching weeks later so fumigation is necessary in two week increments. If Advantage isn't providing any results consider using either Revolution or Frontline Plus. Sometimes one works better than another. Furthermore please avoid using any over the counter flea products such as collars, sprays, powders, etc. There have been many pets who suffered severe chemical burns, poisoning and fatality as a result of these. You can read more about this in full detail from the following website: http://www.hartzvictims.org/ Be sure to vacuum frequently and throw away the vacuum bag immediately aftewards if you are not using a bagless model to prevent the eggs from hatching and jumping out of the vacuum bag back into your home. Start fresh, as though they were everywhere. Get a spray or powder to put around the perimeter of your yard. Have your dog groomed with a flea dip. Then use the advantage. While he is at the groomer you should bomb the house. Make sure you clean everything in the house. Vacuum all that you can, and throw the bag away soon as you are done. Just throw away his bedding, and replace it with new. Get some instant flea killer spary for after. Our dog had fleas last summer, what a PAIN it was. Good luck!

I don't know if it will help you but I use the blue Dawn dishsoap. It kills the fleas and is gentle on their skin. Makes you wonder why you would wash your dishes in it.lol. Its sounds crazy but it works for me.

I use Frontline Plus on my dog and have no problems with fleas at all. A weekly bath sounds a little excessive too. Sometimes, the more you bath them, the more your dog might smell cos' you could be drying out your dog's skin too much and your poor dog is trying its best to produce enough oils to counter that. Maybe cut it down to every 2 - 3 weeks and see if that improves. My dog only gets a bath every 2 months! And she's an indoor dog. And she doesn't smell like a dog.

Try putting apple cider vinegar in the drinking water . Start with only a little, so they will get used to the taste. Building up to about 1 teaspoon full. Use apple vinegar to dip him in and do not rinsed him off the vinegar smell will not last long Or give her bath in nothing but white vinegar (from a spray bottle) and a little baking soda. . It will also made your dogs coat very soft and shiny. This is also good for tears in your dogs eyes though it will take time

The more you wash a dog (or any animal) the more oil it's skin produces to try to keep up with what is stripped away. If you start washing your dog less frequently, his oil production will go down and he will not begin to smell as quickly between baths. Also, it will keep his skin healthier and less itchy, too. Once you are bathing him less, the medication will last longer. I would switch to another vet-bought flea treatment if the advantage isn't working. I use Frontline on my dog and have had no problems. You shouldn't mix multiple flea treatments at the same time like advantage and a collar or spray. You could overdose your dog and make him sick, have convulsions, or even die. Also, you should treat your whole house for fleas at the same time, just because you are not getting bit, doesn't mean they are not there, fleas prefer pets over humans, they usually just bite us if they can't find something better. Do two treatments 2-3 weeks apart to make sure you get fleas that hatch after the first treatment, to be sure you have broken the cycle. Keep your dog out of high grass and bushes outside and consider spraying your yard or at least keep the grass cut short to discourage fleas and ticks. Good Luck.
