The idea of finding "Home"

One of my favourite films is Garden State, and in that film Zach Braff's character talks about a difficulty in finding that "homely" feeling anymore. This is something that I can really relate to.

Once I left home to go to University, it was never quite the same when I went back. My room was given to another sister and there wasn't room for me to go back if I'd wanted to. It does of course still have my family and the people I love there but something changed after University that stopped that house feeling like "Home."

Since university I have not had the money to get on the housing ladder and have lived in many rented properties, most of the time it is difficult to find somewhere to stay longer than a years contract before the owner wants to sell the property or move back into it themselves.

Does anybody else relate to this loss when it comes to a sense of home? Have you already found home, and if so how did you find it, and where?

I think the idea of home as portrayed in the movie Garden State means more than just the house where you live in. In Zach Braff's case, he returned to the home where he grew up but he can't feel any sense of belonging there. He only felt "home" when he starts to connect with Natalie Portman's character. I think it's the same for most people. You can't really find "home" until you meet people who make you feel a sense of belonging.

Yes I agree, that the sense of home is really something that comes from the people who instill that sense in you rather than a particular location. In a way I suppose it's a rather obvious point that in our life times we may move house many times but it is the people that stay with us that are home to us rather than the place that we are moving to or from.

I agree that it's the people you connect with that makes a place a home. I think once you find a partner then that homey feeling will come back. It's funny though when I go to my dad's I still pretty much feel like I'm at home.

Well for myself, home is still the same old house in the same small city that it's always been. I always thought that I wouldn't like coming home and visiting during school, but I've found that it's something I really do enjoy. During high school I always talked about getting out of that small town, but now, it's really hard to see myself getting away.

But I do understand what Braff was trying to say when talking about home. For many, home is more than just a house or a city. It's a feeling. It's that sense of comfort that you get being with your family. The scenery might change, but you'll always be at home with them.

i totally agree that the place you grow is never really your home as i think it's "home" is something you have find for yourself. i would love to move out and go some place else but i can't afford it. i can't really connect with anyone here, i can't find a boyfriend either so i guess i'm pretty lonely.
