Do you REALLY know about Ferrets? |
| |
| Do you know that Ferrets are carnivorous, belonging to the Mustelidae family, the oldest living family in the Carnivore? There are 2 species of ferrets: Black-footed and domestic. Wild ferrets can be found worldwide except in Australia and some Oceanic Islands. The European and black-footed ferrets are two different breeds that are similar only in size. Black-footed ferrets have broader heads, less pointed faces and larger ears and eyes than their domestic cousins. Their legs, feet, tips of their heads are black or dark brown. Domestic ferrets have larger front feet for digging, wide tails that taper off towards the tip, and may vary in color. Ferrets' eyes are black or red with round pupils when open, and slits, like cats when closed in bright light. But the slits are horizontal, not vertical. There are sable, albino, silver, cinnamon and chocolate ferrets. Even angora ferrets exist with longer hair. In the wild, ferrets are very territorial and live solitary lives. Male ferrets exclude other males from their territory, and females exclude other females. But males and females' territories may overlap, however their hunting styles are different. The females tend to go after smaller prey than males. Both males and females hunt rabbits, but females can also go down into the burrows of rats and voles. Ferrets are lovable, friendly, playful little animals. Being very curious, they need attention and lots of toys. A sleeping ferret may seem like a dead ferret because it's body temperature drops considerably. Waking up ferrets shiver terribly to bring up their temperatures. Ferret owners, did you realize all of this? | | My Guy Sly | | | | |

| | I'm not a ferret owner, but I *do* try to learn new things every day and I enjoyed reading this. I didn't know most of these facts and I didn't know there were so many types of ferrets (with great names, I might add!) What kinds of toys do your ferrets like best? | | | | | | |

| | My ferrets like tubes they can crawl through and overturned baskets they can hide in. they especially love plastic shopping bags and the noise they make. They have one squeay toy that I think they think is another ferret and their reaction to it is a riot. thanks for asking and I'm happy you enjoyed the discussion. | | | |

| | They do sound very appealing and must be a lot of fun .. but I wouldn't get one just on that basis .. I think you need to be really sure you want a pet before getting them .. fun to read all about them though .. | | | |

| | Lots of interesting info there. I knew some, but not all of it. Here are some other things you may not have known. The black footed ferret is currently being rehabilitated in the American Southwest. A big part of their rehabilitation is the restoration of their primary food source -- the prairie dog. | | | | | | |

| | The only thing I know about ferrets is something I read or heard about somewhere ... (and I am not an owner) .. and that is that ferrets do need to be mated or they may die .. but that sounds very odd .. so I suppose it can't be true or the world would be littered with dead and dying ferrets all over the place .. that and they can have a nasty nip ... !! | | | | | | |

| | Actually, ferrets cannot be sold unless they are neutered and their lifespan can be pretty long considering the problems they are prone to. thanks for the response | | | |

| | This is why ferrets must be fixed. That is why Pet Stores fix them. If a female ferret is not mated she can die. The only way to change that is to have her mate with a vasectomized Hob who can't get her pregnant anyways. | | | |

| | I had heard some of this, but it is fascinating. We had two ferrets and I loved them, they were such sweet pets and so docile with my kids. | | | | | | |

| | Ferrets are intelligent, curious, playful, persistent, inventive, fun to be around and they take good care of you! Another reason I like them is that they are all individuals with different personalities. They also like to steal loose objects and disorganise parts of your home, especially house plants. In return they put great demands on you! Not everyone likes to always think about not letting dangerous objects be left around, always be prepared to not find their socks, always be attentive to how they feel, because if they get ill it's often something which has to be taken care of in a hurry. It's also important to realize ferrets are animals which will require lots of time (both to play with and take them out for walks when they are awake and feel like it, and as a long term committment), require that you always have money enough to take care of them.
