Can you show a movie to the public for free?  | |  I have a client for whom I'd like to offer multiple free screenings of the film, "This is America, Charlie Brown." We would not charge for the screenings, but would promote them in advertising. Is this legal?

Even though you are not charging, you are still using their product for your own uses. If you advertise then it is not just you and a few friends getting together. It is more than personal use, so you would have to pay the company who made the movie. THis how they make their money, it is the same as if you went to the car dealership and said, I just want to drive the car for a few days, can I have it for free? If you show the movie without paying the company, you are not paying them for a service you receive. That is not fair or right.

A lot of them will say that any kind of public exhibition is illegal. Like most concepts in copyright law there is probably some gray area. I would try posting your question on a legal forum dealing with copyright.
