If you were asked to build a city, which structure would you build first?

First I will make a big building for the people than I will put fire department, police and hospital after that I will make couple of soccer fields and two big malls that are connected together with one bridge.

Building a city means taking so many different parameters into consideration. Be it infrastructure, hotels,securtity measures, medical facilities,schools n so many other basic requirements. But if i am given such a chance i would build a quality hospital first. You should have something for the prople if they get injured or anything wrog happens. Once the hospital is made i would be rest assured that my other plans for the city will be done as they were planned:)

I think I would build the seat of government. This would be a classic style building with high columns of white marble. It would be a symbol of the city, a place people could identify with, and one that would shape the future of the place.

Oh! what a question! A multi faith building, or a magistrates court and council or town official offices.

A prison service or a hospital? A school or a place of work?

A group of houses or grave yard.

I don't know what would be first! Perhaps a power house for electricity.

excellent topic! I believe it best to first build what I will call ENLIGHTENMENT, a complete education centre! Let it house a library from the simplest to the deepest of topics, styles and content with appropriate accomodation for all ages and physical needs.
Let it have ample daytime sit-ins( where people from all walks find their place where they can freely gather and learn and even input) and ample courses to further man's development, both personally, professionally and contibutory within the community.
Complete and compliment it all with daycare and health centres and cafeterias and indoor gardens where the sun always shines and plants thrive on all the carbon dioxide from active minds and mouths and plenty of seatings for spontaneous little meetings..

I'd build a chocolate shop, it would be made out of special non-melty chocolate that everyone could nibble. I really, really like chocolate and that's why.

But to be more practical, I'd probably build a fire station with a hospital in it, because I'm accident prone and I'd want everyone else to be safe.

A state of the art library with super sophisticated internet capability as well as millions of books. There would also be a free coffee bar and restaurant. Part of the internet section would have jobs that people could do in a day on line and be paid for at checkout. All board games would be available to anyone who ared to play with others signed up at the time and there would be daily run offs with cash rewards. There would also be a comfortable modern screening room (just like the ones in Hollywood mansions) for viewing new and old movies (with free popcorn) and a nicely appointed rest area to take a refreshing little nap. It would be open and staffed 24/7.

The first structure I would build is a monument to ME. People need to recognize that if I had an unlimited budget, unlimited manpower, and infinite resources, then I must be an all-knowing and all-powerful Roman God. They naturally would need a place to praise me, would they not?

...ha ha. Just kidding.

In reality I would leave it to the people to decide. Educated people will always know what's best for themselves and I would not intervene with their will.

But since this is just for fun after all, I would agree with your best response choice. I would build a learning center. A hospital would seem a natural choice but learning about the human body, diseases, politics, science, mathematics, well...everything is the root of all progress and all that is good.

Every other structure and utility would become more efficient, more abundant, and everything will thrive from there.
