Euthanasia for severely disabled newborns? | | I was trying to figure out whether this belonged in S&P or PACE, but since it seems to be more of a political issue than a scientific (or even philosophical) one, I figured I'd put it here.
For those who haven't been keeping up with the news, in the UK there's been a call for opening the question: should severely disabled newborns be euthanized? See the BBC for more info and Google News for related articles. Basically, it boils down to a clash between a purely pragmatic approach to medicine (and costly national health care) and the human heart. Personally, I can see the merit in both sides of the debate, and it's the kind of thing where I don't know how you could really put such a system in place. I mean, surely you'd need the approval of the parents, and how many parents would be willing to give the OK to that if they didn't kill the child off during pregnancy? Regardless, it's a very deep and interesting debate that calls into question basic assumptions regarding human rights and the sanctity of life. I think these questions were much simpler when we didn't have the medical marvels available to us today to keep the human body alive and functioning (when normally it would not) with far greater success and for longer periods of time--though all at a substantial monetary cost

I would hate to think of a doctor doing that to a child of mine because it costs too much money or they personally feel that they wouldn't have a great life. Also, who would set such standards for the quality of life for a newborn? Some people wouldn't want to live on life support yet others want to live no matter what-how do we know what newborns want? I know a few mothers with severely disabled children, but they treasure every minute they have with them and their children are a gift.
