On the Valentine's Day episode for "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" Lionel Richie sang two songs. The first song he sang was one of his older ones, "Truly". The second one was off of his recently released cd. The cd is called "Coming Home" and the song he sang yesterday from it is called "Why". I have loved Lionel's singing both with the Commodores and as a solo artist. Yesterday was no exception with my admiration of him. He can still put out the smooth soulful sounds and grooving jams I've always loved him for. Not only can he sing, but he is very pleasant to look at.

I have one of his early cd's. Actually its a cassette tape. It has the song "Dancing on the ceiling" on it. "Truly" is a beautiful song but I don't know if I have that one. I guess I go digging through boxes to see if I can find it again. Yes, he is a good singer and nice looking too.

I love "Dancing On the Ceiling". I think Mountain Dew used it for a commercial not too long ago and it was a pretty cute and funny commercial. Stephanie

He was also one of the main songwriters at Motown, but this was back in the 1970's & 1980's. While I have not really kept up with him that much, I sort of consider him the Smokey Robinson of the 80's.

My reasoning for calling him that is because when Berry Gordy started Motown in 1959/1960, Bill (As in William "Smokey" Robinson) was the one writing songs not only for himself & The Miracles, he was also writing songs for other Motown artists. Jump ahead 20 years later, Lionel Richie was doing just that.

So not only was he writing songs for himself, he was also writing for other artists. One song that stands out was Diana Ross' big hit, "Missing You" ... She sang it, but the song itself was written by Lionel Richie in tribute to Marvin Gaye.

Oh - yeah - forgot to mention this. That song he sang with Diana Ross, "Endless Love" for the movie by the same title, was also written by him.
