I have bought a new table. Please enjoy it with me. |
|
Yesterday I took delivery of my new hall table, and I am very proud of it.
Unimaginatively, I have placed it in the hall, beneath a print of 'The Death of Nelson'. It is made of finest Yew (the table that is), my favourite wood, and is in the Queen Anne style.
When it arrived, I described it as magnificent, but after two glasses of port, it had been promoted to exquisite. It is without doubt, the finest hall table in my hall.
Upon my new prize, I have placed my glass, hand made cabinet which houses a replica of HMS Victory, partly made from the wood of that famous old ship. On the left is a marble bust of the goddess Aphrodite, and on the right (happily so I thought), is a marble bust of the god Apollo.
It all looks rather lovely, and I am terribly pleased.
I hope you like it too.

Desiderata (499) | 3 years ago | Hello Mr Deeeky - yes, you are quite right, I should have posted a picture. But I am not a great picture poster, and I only thought about after I started the discussion. Silly me.
Sorry about that!

2. nannacroc (2376) | 3 years ago | it sounds lovely and you have made me jealous. I haven't got a hall big enough for a table like that and I have grandchildren who would somehow manage to hurt themselves on it if I did. Enjoy your table, polish it regularly.

Desiderata (499) | 3 years ago | Thank you my friend. Size does vary from country to country. My flat in London would not have been able to hold such a table. My flat here (in Azerbai-bloody-jan) holds it comfortably. But my house in the US could have held at least thirteen I would say.
And guess which one was the most expensive? Easy question really.

7. katiedoubleu (2953) | 3 years ago | Your new table sounds splendid! I'm glad to hear that you had a perfect spot for it. I reloaded this page three times hoping that a picture would be loading so I could literally see its beauty, but either my computer is on strike today or there isn't a picture.
In any case, I have a good imagination and can "see" it in my imagination's playground. Beneath Nelson and near Apollo and Aphrodite is an excellent choice for location. I have a room for things like this filled with fun items manufactured all around the world and you have me wanting a table like yours.:-)

Desiderata (499) | 3 years ago | Hello Katie,
Have you been to London?
| |
|
|
katiedoubleu (2953) | 3 years ago | No, I haven't been to London, but it's on my to-do list. A few of my genealogical lines are from there and I want to see the lands of my forefathers... it will just take a while because there are so many places! What's your favorite art piece of those you own?
| |
|
|
Desiderata (499) | 3 years ago | Ooh.
Pause.
I think my favourite is a full length sculpture of Lord Nelson in bronze, seated on a lovely marble plinth. It is about two feet high and very nicely fashioned.
I am a huge fan of Lord N, but I think I like this best because I really rooted it out. I searched the alleys, courts, rows, and tiny byways of London looking for just such an item. And when I did at last come upon it, I managed to bid and bargain for a rather good price. As I am usually hopeless at bartering, I was really quite pleased, and it has held a special affection ever since.
I am a little bingo for Greek columns too; especially with a bust on top (if you will pardon the expression).
If I were not from London, then Athens would have to be my choice. What a place. What a people. What a history.
Glory be to the Greeks.

katiedoubleu (2953) | 3 years ago | The sculpture sounds lovely. Isn't it fun looking around for treasures to enhance the decor?! I was on vacation in the southeast US a few years ago and happened to glace up to see a shop called "Treasures of the World" and almost hyperventilated until I got in there to see what they had. Unfortunately their shop name was better than the merchandise, but that's the kind of place I adore.
What kind of shop was it where you found your bronze Nelson? Tiny and family owned? Larger specialty store? I'm not just hopeless at bartering, I never even get up the nerve to DO it at all, so very good that it worked for you this time!
Athens is a good choice. Oh great, now I'm hungry for Moussaka and Baklava and I don't have the ingredients!:-)

|
|
Desiderata (499) | 3 years ago | Hello Katie - there is a lovely shop in GreenwisC (as in GMT) called 'The First Shop in the World', because of its longitudinal position. I am sure you would enjoy that very much.
As for my sculpture. Did you ever read a discussion I (in a previous life) wrote called 'How lovely that would be'?
The location of the bookshop in Cecil Row is precisely where I found my little treasure, and I have absolutely no doubt you would adore the whole place.

8. Darkwing (7519) | 3 years ago | Hmmmmm. I'm seeing deeper into your soul with every discussion you post!:-) I'll explain...
Yew... The yew tree is an ancient wisdom keeper and the gateway to the otherworld. It is of great historical value, providing us with a living witness to so much of our cultural development that it is unique amongst trees. I therefore find it quite symbolic that you decided to place your yew table beneath a picture depicting Nelson's death.
The Yew has been the subject of myths, legends and Acts of Parliament; it has become part of religious beliefs and is featured in a wealth of literary material. The Yew has also been used as a marker in the landscape because of its exceptional longevity. Celtic bows were often made from Yew and Robin Hood is even thought to have used a bow made from this wood, although there is no hard evidence to actually support this.
If Yew has been brought to your awareness today you are being asked to examine some aspect of your life that has been allowed to stagnate and wither. Is there a talent or skill that you have been neglecting? Are you allowing an all-consuming passion for something to steal time and energy from other important areas of your life? Perhaps you have neglected your body, your diet and your exercise. Or is there some demon of sickness, fear, or loss of faith that is preventing you from expressing your full potential?
Aphrodite... The Goddess of love; symbol of beauty and sweetness. Incredibly seductive; she seduces both mortals and immortals, time and again. This puts me in mind of your lovely wife, apart from the fact that I believe she is devoted to only one man!:-)
Apollo... The God of light, prophecy and music, whom although he loves parties, has a high standard of moral values and purity. Since Apollo also is the God of life and death, humans are especially aware of following his standards; or else Apollo may strike them dead with one of his fatal arrows. lol.
Handsome and well built, he has had his share of love affairs although because of his virtue, he has not been as busy as Zeus has. Nymphs and mortal maidens are his types. Does this sound a little like you? I think so!:-)
Replica of the Victory... This, deep-thinking as I am, represented to me the element of water, and the west. The west represents a place of rest and the otherworld, in the Isle of Avalon and Arthurian Legend. In Greek Mythology, Neptune (or Poseidon), was given control and dominion over the water element and thus became the god of the sea.
So, to my mind, everthing you have in your hallway, supposedly the passageway into and out of your home, holds meaning. Sorry if I got carried away with that, but as I read this most interesting post, my mind began to wander into the symbolic meanings of the contents of your hall. I'm still marvelling over the fact that you placed the picture of Nelson's death above the yew table. Amazing! Please don't ever change the position of that picture. Furthermore, the other objects you mentioned having in your hall, provoked even deeper thoughts from me! I find that awesome, and right now, I'm going to get myself a drink and sit quietly for a while, reflecting further on this. I hope you don't mind.
Thank you for the insight into your unconcious!:-) Brightest Blessings, my dear friend.

Desiderata (499) | 3 years ago | And thank you Darkwing for a truly astonishing reply.
Everything on and around my little table is symbolic for me, but I was unaware of the history of yew wood. I simply like Yew, as I find it a very beautiful material.
I think I too need to sit awhile and reflect on your wonderful, wonderful response.
Thank you.

Darkwing (7519) | 3 years ago | Awwww, you're so kind!:-)
As I read through, I just was putting things together and coming up with some astounding thoughts! lol. If you visit my hubs, you'll find an item on tree lore in there. You might find that intersting.:-)
Brightest Blessings, my friend.

9. cloudwatcher (3516) | 3 years ago | You get so enthusiastic about everything that it is easy to rejoice with you. Enthusiasm is the second most contagious feeling there is. Do you know what I consider to be the most contagious?
You sound like I felt (and still feel) when I bought a new cabinet for my lounge room. Quite uninteresting in comparison with yours, but it thrills me. Our family joined to buy us a new, very big, LCD TV with inbuilt hi def top box and an HDD/DVD recorder for Christmas. Of course, it demanded a new cabinet, so I rearranged the room and bought an enormous, solid timber cabinet and I love it.
As you know, I don't watch TV but I can sit and look at my cabinet while I am working (when the TV isn't on, that is)
I think you should post a photo of your new table.

Desiderata (499) | 3 years ago | Thank you CloudWatcher. I seem to recall you mentioning your cabinet. I am glad to see it is still going strong.
