Will it make a difference if we love our own language? |
|
There are so many Filipinos who are bilingual. Even on our day to day activities, we use english to express ourselves. It is very seldom to hear the use of Filipino on conferences or even in offices. The sad part is that even in some of our schools, the children are prohibited to use the local tongue as english should be the primary language.
When you reject your own language, there is a great possibility that you are ashamed of being a Filipino. You detest your culture and your traditions, you make fun of pinoys and you do not use your products. The result, the Filipino companies do not have sales because you prefer the imported ones. They close shops and workers lose their jobs. Crimes will be on the rise and peace and order is a thing of the past. We are now on this stage. Do you want to make a difference and make our country great again?

1. mulder8scully5 (1330) | 3 years ago | I think we do love our own language. Well, most of us do. But it just looks like we don't but these people are just a small potion of our population. I still think we do love our own language.:)

everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | I hope so too. I think, loving our language can get us out of this quagmire.

|
| elginkoh (62) | 3 years ago | Our mother tongue of course we should love it and keep maintaining the language. The point is when we communicate with foreigners our mother tongue is not communicable, so more or less we've to learn some of their languages in order to socialize with them. Thus foreign language is worthwhile to learn too.
| |
|
|
everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | Of course we use english when we talk to foreigners being english as the universal language. That is a given.

everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | Our national language is Filipino based primarily in Tagalog (which is a dialect). These 2 are different. The Tagalog of chair is salumpuit while in Filipino it is silya.
I have nothing against english being taught in school. What matters is that this was and is given much priority. Instead of teaching us Filipino literature, they gave priority on english literature. We know shakespeare better that lam ang or Lope K. Santos because our 1st teachers were americans. With these, we were trained to think that foreign goods are better than ours.
I am not referring to native crafts here but all products made by filipino businessmen, filipino capital and filipino workers in the philippines. Buying these products will help the filipino businessmen to grow. They will pay their workers and employees more. These workers and employees will buy filipino products and the cycle is complete. The economy will improved. Japan and Korea did this and their economy is constantly growing.

maryannemax (10433) | 3 years ago | yep. that's why korea and japan are really improves economically because people from these countries are taught to love their own products and even their own language. however, they, too are learning english even if it's too expensive for them. they even take online classes where infact, their teachers online are filipinos, too. i know these because i was once offered a job to teach korean english in Ortigas. i'm proud to be a filipino since we're looked up to other countries when it comes to english literacy.

everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | hey you got 2 pluses for that! hehehe! I run a foundation and some of our scholars earn additional income by teaching english to japanese, chinese, korean and arabs. In my position, I can not help but be disappointed in our government's inefficiency and uncaring attitude towards our poor people. That is why, there are issues that I have to be involved even if my star reputation dives into lowest point.

|
|
maryannemax (10433) | 3 years ago | 2 pluses? no need to. it's an honest mistake to be posting two comments. sorry for that.
yep. you have a point there. it's sad to know that there are lots of poor families. i hope that if not all, atleast some of their needs be addressed especially education for the children.

maryannemax (10433) | 3 years ago | and i am sorry to learn about your star rating being dropped to eight. it was a ten before, right? i hope people here won't rate us negatively when we oppose to the topics they have. for as long as we're inside the boundaries of the discussions and we have our points to say, that does not deserve a negative rating, right?

everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | Okay lang if that star reach 1 as long as I can say what is in my heart. Let us help our co pinoys here so that we will all earn enough.

3. lossforredwords (2696) | 3 years ago | i understand your point but as we all know english is the universal language. i dont think that teaching and letting children know how tospeak english is detesting our own. they are just preparing them for future venture. i think Filipino language will always be love by Filipinos, English is just the second witch will help us to deal with foreign land. If im corredt lots of Filipino people got a job at what we call "call centers" which basically powered with English language.
| |
| |
|
|
everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | English being the universal language is beside the point. Improving our economy based on filipino capital and filipino investor is better if given the chance. The capital stays in the country. While foreign investors bring their profit back to their land, so we lose much.
Call centers are just temporary jobs and we should invest more on permanent jobs and companies by filipino investors. if you will educate filipinos on the idea that we will work on foreign land or foreign companies, we are getting nowhere. Sad but true...

4. Desiderata (499) | 3 years ago | A lovely and impassioned plea, and I love you for it.
Whilst their is a supreme logic that suggests to me that the whole world should speak a single tongue; and that the obvious choice should be English; there is also a supreme duty, attendant on all people to use, explore and promote their own language.
I have yet to come across a language that is not very beautiful. I sympathise greatly with your point of view, and I fully support you in your use of your own language.
There is little of material value that I can do, except to ask you to teach me what 'Thank you' is in Filipino. I will use it wherever it seems appropriate, and by doing so, add a little more Filipino into the cup of the world.
I hope this helps.

|
everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | I love you, too, Steve! Thank you is 'Salamat' and thank you very much is 'maraming salamat' in our tongue. I have this urge to tell you that thank you is 'maganda ka' (hahaha!) but didn't. 'Maganda ka' means you are beautiful and the word for ugly is 'pangit'.
I do not know why we do not have a single tongue but the Tower of Babel gave us an acceptable idea. With the type of leaders we have now, I am glad we speak differently.
| |
|
|
Desiderata (499) | 3 years ago | Ok, here goes. Are you ready?
Salamat!
How did I do?
| |
|
|
everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | Well, well well, you are doing great!
The Filipino of how are you is 'kumusta ka'? See the similarity to 'como usta usted?' in spanish? We were colonized by Spain for more than 300 years. Spanish language influenced, in a way, our own language. Do not be surprised if the older generation know how to speak spanish. There is even a province here that speak spanish (as their dialect).

SunSix (11899) | 3 years ago | Isn't tagalog the national language of Philippines?
| |
|
|
everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | No, it is not. Filipino is our national language which is based in Tagalog. There are many words in Filipino which is not a part of Tagalog. Tagalog is a dialect of the Tagalog region. Imagine, our fellow pinoys do not know that our national language is Filipino! This is absurb!

SunSix (11899) | 3 years ago | Do Filippino have a different script? I was under the impression that tagalog is the national language of Philippines. What does Philippines means in your language?
| |
|
|
everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | Philippines is Pilipinas in our language. Maybe those who are saying that tagalog is our national language was absent when that was taught in school or they are from the provinces and do not seem to know the difference.

5. totalearnings (816) | 3 years ago | well it does make a difference if we love our own language bei it filipino or any other. communicating and dealing in our own language certainly adds to the sense of belonging. but as a fashion people try to speak some other language which most follow, with added accents and show offs. i feel one should respect ones own language first than any other that is or needs to be used as situation demands. that way, yes, one is slowly moving away from his own culture and traditions.
| |
| |
|
|
everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | I am glad you understand what i am trying to say here. If we treat our language as second rate, it is more likely that this attitude has seeped into our consciousness and affected the way we think, talk and act.

| 6. himagsikan (35) | 3 years ago | I think it's more than just the language. English -- along with Japanese, French and Spanish -- is becoming the global language for trade. That causes it to become a necessity for people to learn it if they want to make sure that others understand them, especially if they're talking to a foreigner. It's very much like how Latin was regarded in the middle ages.
It also has something to do with our attitude. It's a reality that some of our fellow Filipinos do have a bias towards all things foreign: foreign food, foreign clothing, even foreign spouses. We don't have to say that the Filipino is better. What we just have to change is that perspective that the foreigner is better.
| |
| |
|
|
everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | Yes, you have a point here. That is due to colonial mentality because of that more than 300 years of spanish colonization. Our parets inherited the traits from their forefathers and then transfered those traits to us. I hope we can eliminate this for our own good.

7. ossie16d (6332) | 3 years ago | It is perfectly acceptable to teach children a second language, and that can of course be English if it is not their first language. The Phillipines is part of Asia and is not English, so the first language that should be taught there is the local language with English as a second language.
I find it sad that people do not have pride in their country and prefer to buy imported things, which in turn means less fewer people are employed etc. I have to say that I will always buy Australian made products over imported ones and have been known to buy nothing at all because all that was available was imported things. The other thing is that I am quite sure that anything that is imported into the Philippines will be dearer than locally produced products, so it doesn't make sense. At the same time, I suspect that if people feel they are not worthy, then it follows that they will think that anything made anywhere else has to be better than the home produced things. Now that is sad and not true. Of course every country does produce some inferior products, but not everything is so.
Your plea is very timely I think everlasting, and perhaps it is one that should be shouted from the rooftops in your own country. Push for children to be taught and speak their own language, because they will still know English and can practice it at certain times of the day.
Good luck everlasting and I do sincerely hope that the powers that be in your country see that they need to instil national pride in the population.
| |
| |
|
|
everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | Thank you very much for that encouragement, ossie. I have to clear this thing out. The imported goods coming from other countries like China, Korea and othe asian counties are cheaper than our locally produced goods. this is so because some of the raw materials of these locally produced goods are imported too. Those products which uses local materials do not have government subsidies like that enjoyed by our neighboring asian countries, so our products are more expensive. The other imported products coming from the usa and other developed countries have no equivalent product here. The irony is that these products that came from these developed countries were produced here as we the just the subcontractor of these branded goods.

8. manong05 (2930) | 3 years ago | We are citizens of our country and at the same time citizens of the world where English is accepted to be the international language. We need to have a good command of both languages. It is not an either-or case but a both-and one. Learning the international language doesn't make us less patriotic and possess a colonialized mentality. The world becoming more and more a global village with English as the main language, we are left with no other options but to learn it if we want to have a meaningful interaction and survival in this new emerging village. We must love our own language and at the same time try to learn the best way we could the international language.
| |
| |
|
|
everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | This is not a queston of learning another language but the issue of not giving priority on our language. Giving it priority and respect could instill patriotism and nationalism which most of us do not have.

They are the one who should adjust so that we would be able to communicate and not us. We are in the Philippines so we have to use the Filipino language. Just like if you are going to Japan, learning Japanese is a must.

10. SunSix (11899) | 3 years ago | learning one's mother tongue is important. I don't think you should discourage anyone speaking in the native language. Even in schools. In India we have a three language policy.

everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | Previously, we have a 3 language policy too but now they deleted spanish in the curriculum. We have english and filipino as languages to learn.

everlasting (9961) | 3 years ago | Yes in that order. You will be surprised that there are moves today tomake english our primary language in school. This is ridiculous. Maybe, this is also the reason why we are not improving as a nation.
