Fitness and good health don't have to be expensive!  email this discussion to a friend?

How is it possible that every year Americans spend more money on diet and weight loss aids and, research shows, every year we get fatter?
Something is not working. So let’s stop doing it. Stop buying every new weight loss remedy. Stop eating low-fat, low-carb, sugar-free and so on, because there are no free lunches, so to speak. None of this is calorie-free. Stop saying you’ll exercise tomorrow.
Get back to basics, start at the beginning, do the things that actually work – and remember, they’re free!
I know it’s almost too simple to say but:
Add 20-30 minutes of exercise to your day. I want to get up in the morning and take a 20-minute walk – period. Walk away from your house for 10 and then 10 minutes back and you have just done 20 minutes of calorie-burning aerobic training. Or, if you are really pressed for time in the a.m., on your lunch break, break a little sweat (nothing radical), just walk at a steady pace for 20 minutes.
Reduce your food intake; eat less at every meal. At home, prepare a dish of food that is moderately sized, a small (4-5 oz) portion of protein and vegetables and maybe a little soup or a salad (in a small salad bowl) to start. At a restaurant – plan to take some home. Ask the waiter for a take-away container when you order, and make a habit of taking part of your meal home.
Keep it simple so you will really do it – daily – and things will change.
The more difficult we make trying to lose weight the worse we feel about it and don't succeed!

I agree Debbie, BACK TO BASICS! You don't need any of so called "STATE OF THE ART DIET PLANS. People need to go back to the "OLD SCHOOL" way of getting healthy.. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. Eat healthy

The portions served in the US are very large. Eating out there I could easily survive on one meal a day. So, I agree portion size is very important. Also, fat free foods tend to have a lot of sugar in them to compensate for taste and sugar is addictive.

Milk is not very high in fat, so why bother with a low fat milk that is not satisfying anyway. Food needs to be enjoyed.

Also, I don't like the terms used like "guilt free" - you shouldn't feel guilty about food anyway and conversely that kind of terminology gives you free reign to eat unlimited amounts, which is wrong.

I;ve seen this on out TV .. my gosh some of those portions are so big they would last me two days .. but it's all so cheap you can't blame folks for eating it ..

Thank-you so much for this, every year we try new ideas and every year we are made miserable by an inability to loose the weight.
When we were kids in the 70's I can't remember there being nearly so many fat people and it is all due to convenience foods beoing so expensive that we still cooked at home and take-away was something that happened on holiday.
We ate proper home cooked food and as kids we played outside.
I know I weighted less when I still had a mum to cook my tea.
I hope your message of common sense reaches mylotters and helps us remember how we should just take care of ourselves everyday.

I eat 3 vetables per day,3 fruits per day.small amout of lean meat,drink water and walk and it works.

I can do all the reducing bits, all the eating better bits, but what i can rarely do is the exercise more bits .. especially through the winter .. I wish I could work out some way to exercise without having to use muscles .. because the minute I start to do anything in the slightest energetic my flippin' muscles go 'twang' and it takes them ages to heal ..

But I do agree with all the rest .. don't waste money of 'faddy' diets .. they just make pounds for the sellers and they don't change our body pounds just our pockets pounds hehe
