Cats won't accept new dog and as a result we have .... CAT FIGHTS |
| |
| I have three cats. A year ago we got a puppy dog, a welsh pembroke corgie. The first couple of months were HORRIBLE because none of my cats would accept the dog and they'd just GROWL at her all the time. After one year, they started to accept the dog but we still have problems. The red cat perfectly accepted her, he just pushes her away with paws If she barks too much. The black and white cat sometimes tries to scratch her If she gets annoying. The orange and white cat HATES her and If he could he'd kill her , but he doesn't scratch her. However, we now have a HUGE problem. The two cats who don't like the dog always stay in my room. They like to sleep on my bed and they have been doing it since they were puppies. The three of them never had any problems but now, anytime the red cat enters the room, they start to growl and the get into a fight. They start to scratch each other for no apparent reason, it's not only the red cat they try to scratch, they do it with one another and it's impossible to make them stop. Why do you think it's happening ? what should I do ? I can't keep them locked all day long :\ | | | | | |

| | no no, we locked the two other cats and left the red one free to run as he likes in the house. We can even leave him alone with the dog because they get on, even though he doesn't exactly LIKE her, they just get on (or better, he tries to stand her while she tries to be accepted). We have kept them locked for a few days but they still have a tendency to get in a fight :\ my mom loves our cats and her biggest fear just came true :\ | | | |

| | the fact is the fights happen cat versus cat. They don't fight with the dog, they fight with each other when the red one enters my room and I simply don't get why. Maybe because he has the dog's smell on his fur ? but they have as well because we set them free at night and when I feed them, the dog plays around them and they can easily catch her smell :\ also, they (the cats) fight when they're in my room but they get on when we leave them free in the house. I don't get it :\ | | | |

| | Wow! I'm speechless on what to suggest to you, nageki. I've seen alot between dogs and cats but nothing like you mention. You may try talking to your vet about it or maybe he/she knows a behaviorist who could help you. | | | | | | |

| | We got a puppy many years ago when we had 6 or 7 cats and I can't remember any problems similar to what you are having. (but it was a VERY long time ago and the puppy was seriously outnumbered) The thing is, cats are very territorial and in bringing in the dog, you've upset the delicate territorial ballence between them. I think that the problem is that they are all stressed by having to ajust to the new situation. I don't think that there's anything that you can do, just give them time to sort themselves out. Though if they don't. then segregation is the only thing to do. | | | | | | |

| | I tink they need more time to accept the presence of the dog, maybe they're jalous of him, poor dog... cats can be very wicked, they have their own temper, just like human beings, and it is possible they will never accept the do. It this case i can only suggest you to keep them separated. maybe the black and the white cat sees the rdùed one as an enemy because he understand the red cat is a "dog-friend". But keep in mind that cats in general are very possessive: if the b/w cat has chosen your room as his home, he sees the other cat as an enemy who wants to steal him his property! sorry for my english, but I am italian and new of the website! | | | | | | |

| | Wow, this is a very strange thing to happen indeed. I'm honestly not totally sure why this is happening. Maybe they attack the other cat because they see the cat being tolerant of the dog? or maybe they can smell the dog more on that one cat? I'm sorry, I really don't know what to suggest other than to suggest that you might have to keep them apart for a while and then try to gradually reintroduce them to each other. the pecking order of cats is a strange thing. | | | | | | |

| | I know what you mean.. I have two male cats who hate dogs.. And i had thought of maybe getting a small dog.. but those cats would kill him i think.. well ok maybe i am over exagerating.. But you know what i mean.. So i just don't even think of getting a dog.. if i did it would be maybe a toy chiwawah.. that i would have to carry.. the cats would probably think it was a mouse.. Ok well maybe not.. | | | | | | |
