|  my windows defrag program on my kids computer crashes/stalls every time i go to defrag it . i started up in safe mode and it allowed me to defrag but then in normal mode when i tried again the same thing happenned. the operating system is 98 first version, is this a common problem or have the kids deleted a neccesary file.

| |  If you are running the screensaver it will interupt the defrag program each time it kicks in. We used to have the same problem when we had our old computer running windows 98.
You can disable the program for the screensaver and it should work okay. Try cntrl alt delete and see what is running in the task manager before running the defragmenter.

| |  window's own defrag system sxxks, dont use it, I recommend you use other program, you can find much on internet.
if your kids computer is powerful enough, I recommend you to upgrade to windows XP, then use NTFS format, then you dont need any defragment.

| |  Yes,it's best done in the safe mode as per the advise I have got.I have been advised that running the defragmentation will make my computer work really fast,but also have been warned that it will take up at least 3 to 4 hours to finish.So, I never get started with it because I switch off my computer when I sleep and when at home I need to access it every half hour.

| |  For regular defragmentation jobs I use Auslogics Defrag. To defragment a particular file or folder I use Wincontig.

| |  Wow a windows 98 your joking, well no your not and I can totally relate. I kept one running after the defrags quit and stayed in 'safe mode' for about 14 months despite everybody and all computer technicians baffled at how the darn thing kept running. My advice, without throwing out the window first, is to always run it in safe mode and configure it to have nothing in start-up menu. If a defrag works in the safe mode, thats how you will have to run it. No more standard mode cause I am sorry to say, that computer system is only ready for the grave, it is just a matter of time . . .
