I would ask her what she needs. Babies are costly and she may have a few things she really needs. If you ask, you will not get her something she has several of all ready.

i can relate to your difficulty in selecting gifts. i went through the same last year when my sister borne a baby. it's difficult indeed to choose from apparently a hoardes of items. but, my experience tells that new born babies donot respond to color, sound or music, yes, they could relate to movements but very vaguely. so after a lot of speculations and trouble i inferred that there are only a few varieties left to choose from, 1. clothings, toileteries and accesories 2. gold ornaments 3. national savings certificates. i went for the last one and was hugely appreciated by others as this has to do with longterm and will be an asset. there are various children schemes in LICs and NSCs, you can opt for those.

later on, when the baby grows little bit older, you can always pamper him/ her with all sorts of music and toys and colors.

Humm, buy it a book taht it can colour. With a different paintings that it has to colour them. Or a clothes, a puffy toy.

Ask your sister what she may need, or just give her a gift card from toys r us, that way she can pick out somethign she might like for the baby later on. New babies are more people oriented then toys, my daughter had NO interest in toys till she was about 4-5 months old. she just wanted to play with me and daddy.
