Who, in your view, is the least talented successful actor or actress? |
|
As a teenager I would often enjoy watching Star Trek. I don't imagine I was a particular discerning viewer, but the show definitely had something about it. Looking back, I often cring - Jim! Bones! Spock! Jim! Bones! I have seen Mr Shatner in one or two subsequent roles, and I have always thought that he was an extremely lucky man to have gained such success and fame through his relationship with a very popular show. I have nothing against him personally, not Trekies in general, I just think he is a hopeless actor. Do you feel this way about any 'thespians'?

1. kathy77 (6951) | 1 year ago | My youngest daughter used to watch Star Trek and she would like me to watch it with her I personally did not like this kind of show it is all false but I used to watch it for her sake and I do not like some of the actors in it, and therefore I would agree with you he is a hopeless actor.

2. lilibetha (655) | 1 year ago | This is a really good question, and darn you for making me think so late:) I agree about William Shatner, but he is able to laugh at himself, and that's a good thing. Ali McGraw played the dying young wife in "Love Story," and enjoyed a bit of success before marrying (and divorcing) twice. Many years ago, a movie critic pointed out that she was "a member of the flared nostril school of acting." Ali was never able to convince me that she was her character. A good actor reaches in and pulls me along with him or her, makes me believe that the character/situation is real, and I am hooked.

3. everlasting (7924) | 1 year ago | We have lots of that here in the Philippines. What is ironic is that they have the gall to run for public office now that they are very popular. Mind you, we have also so many politicians who are or were actors and they all suck! They became famous here because of their good looks.

4. raijin (6735) | 1 year ago | I think the least talented actress that I know for now is, Paris Hilton? I think she must be the worst! LoL She shouldn't be hugging the limelights as a celebrity, I think she might do good if she would be doing more scandals then..=) Here in the philippines, I think all of the celebrities got worse when they entered politics. We have a former president who was a former action star, along with his sons. And a present leader, whom her son was an aspiring cheap actor who didn't even made it to the limelight!.. LoL

5. nannacroc (1544) | 1 year ago | I feel exactly the same about William Shatner and, when he was replaced by Patrick Stewart, a trained Shakesperian actor, the difference was incredible and it showed even more clearly how bad Shatners acting was. Have you read any Star Trek books by Shatner? If you think his acting is bad, you will see it compares favourably to his writing talents. In other words, his acting's better.

7. cloudwatcher (2293) | 1 year ago | As you know, I don't watch TV or movies, but occasionally I do like to watch an OLD movie, simply because it is one I can watch without corrupting my mind, and I do enjoy sitting with my husband for a while. I went to the movies a lot as a youngster and knew all the actors and actresses (they were called actresses then, before PC). When I watch old movies now, they are all comedies, because the acting is so, so hammy. About the only exception is Montgomery Clift. His acting in "I Confess" was good. Of course, Humph is still the same. He never did act, so he's more natural. I heard recently that Callan is being released as a set on DVDs. I enjoyed Edward Woodward and I imagine his acting will still be pleasing. Least talented? Possibly Clark Gable.

gbala9 (1303) | 1 year ago | If I'm not mistaken now the politically correct term is Actor. There are all actors, there aren't any actresses anymore. In awards ceremonies too the title has changed to 'Best Female Actor'. Not only Actresses, they are no more Businessman, but Businessperson, no more Chairman but Chairperson, and soon there will be no more women/woman but the demand is for Womyn. I think this political correctness is going a bit too far. What do you think? Care to start a discussion on that??
| |
|
|
Desiderata (503) | 1 year ago | I have already done so (many moons ago). It is a subject about which I feel intensely passionate. In short, I believe those who advocate Political Correctness, should be hung drawn and quartered and have their heads placed above The Aldgate in Old London Town. It is one of the few subjects that change me from the humorous and urbane dandy you see before you, into a murderous and unforgiving fiend.

cloudwatcher (2293) | 1 year ago | Being such an authority on PC I thought you'd know we no longer have actresses (but I still refer to them as such and will continue to do so) Airline hostesses have disappeared. Now they are all stewards. Gone are the days when schoolchildren had to remember male/female names, though I think it is still PC regarding animals. Manholes are now personholes, which is ridiculous.

8. rhinoboy (1361) | 1 year ago | Unfortunately, my wife is a devotee of all the worst forms of televisual crud. I am, therefore, only too familiar with the wooden acting abilities (read: atrocities) of so many sopa operas, medical dramas, and 'teen' dramas that pollute the homes of our nation today. I couldn't nominate any person in particular, as there are so many (and I would be ashamed to waste enough thought to remember their names). I therefore nominate the entire casts of: (in order of priority) Home and Away Neighbours East-enders Emmerdale Hollyoaks Coronation Street Holby City/ Casualty E.R. IMHO, these series' are not made as a piece of film to be proud of, but an endless 'fix' for those who have become addicted through lack of will to do anything more constructive. The ones I think are least talented are the pretty girls with great boobs who quite obviously weren't cast for their ability to read scripts. For the record, I've never like star-trek, and I think that William Shatner is a tw@!

rhinoboy (1361) | 1 year ago | I must admit to a small reluctance to tar Ms Minogue with the same brush as her conterpart Messrs Donovan and moreso Dennis. Their 'bunk' efforts at jumping on the bandwagon cannot really compete with the constant rejeuvenation and frequent success of Kylie's persona. Although I'm not a great fan myself, i think she's almost on a parr with Madonna in terms of success and longevity in her career. I wonder what would happen if I pranced around in gold hot-pants. Oh GOD, now 'I' feel like I should wash.... lol

rhinoboy (1361) | 1 year ago | I agree that he could be the same guy in all of his films. I quite like a lot of the films he stars in, but i think that has more to do with good concepts and plots than his acting ability.

Desiderata (503) | 1 year ago | It is an interesting point you raise. Some actors do seem to play themselves - Michael Caine springs immediately to mind. And numbly so. However, I forgive him, because he is all rather unique really; and he did help out at Rorke's Drift so very well (not even as himself???). When I was young - bottoms were not really a criterion. They are useful, but not really worthy of an Oscar. At least in my view.

limitup (144) | 1 year ago | Yes, Keanu Reeves, in my mind, just is not on that other level. Just like you comment, he plays himself every time. "Woaah..." I also agree with another poster about it having more to do with what kinds of movies they are in as opposed to their acting abilities. I remember loving the movie "Point Break" when I was younger and thought Keanu Reeves was a good actor. I bought the movie recently and popped it in. What in the world was I thinking? I must have liked the story, the surfing, the action, the running chase, the bank robbing, and the sky diving. But I certainly didn't like his acting. Two other actors that come to mind are Charlie Sheen and Adam Sandler. They just have a "light's on, but I'm taking a nap" type of expression to me. Some great actors off the top of my head are Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise (sorry, but he's talented), Gene Hackhan, Gary Sinise, Sean Penn, lots of others.

limitup (144) | 1 year ago | There's a great scene in "Castaway" where the camera pans around him as he talks to his friend about losing his fiancee. You know the one "...with ice in my glass...and now I've lost her all over again...but I'm so glad she was with me there on that island." What a powerful performance. Kudos and hat's off to Mr. Hanks.
