|
In our modern age when there is many food sources out there, what gives us the right to still consume meat and why do we still do it?

What I don't understand about vegetarians is that they use soy and other vegetables and make them look like meat. For example they make "soy burgers". Or "soy hot dogs" I don't get it. If you are against eating meat why do you make the vegetables look like and supposedly taste like meat. I don't get that at all. It doesn't make any sense. Can someone explain that to me.

Makena1968 (633) | 3 years ago | I am guilty of eating some of these "soy" based "meat" substitutes. I love vegi burgers, and vegi dogs, and so on. For someone who really wants to become a vegetarian, especially in this country, I suppose having a "substitute" makes it easier to make that transition to a meatless diet. It helps our taste buds to slowly break away from the taste of real meat. It sort of "appeases" our tongues. It is satisfies our appetite for food of substance, and our body's craving for protein. I've been lucky, as I've learned to cook East Indian food, and that dosn't include any of these "fake" meat products at all. It's just a matter of learning how to cook different kinds of beans and legumes, how to use the spices, how to prepare certain kinds of appetizers and so on. Indian food is very substantial and satisfying by itself, I don't need any "fake" meat products at all. But I don't cook Indian all the time..alas..I do love my vegi burgers sometimes.

The reason for eating meat comes largely from the need to consume the various proteins and ensure a balanced diet. Yes there are alternatives to these food stuffs, but as onmivores we have the choice of what we eat. Providing the animal is farmed in an appropriate way then I have no issue with eating meat. Unfortunately we see too many examples across the world of poor farm management and cruelty to livestock. I totally disagree with that, but I agree we should be able to eat meat and indeed do eat meat myself.

4. Makena1968 (633) | 3 years ago | I am also a vegetarian, have been for forty years. I also believe as you do. However, most people eat meat because they like the taste of it, mostly. And most people believe that animals are here for us to eat. I ate meat for twenty years of my life, and I just never made the connection that by my eating meat, I was also the cause of some animal being slaughtered needlessly, and that I was the cause of the suffering and fear of that creature. Once I made the connection, however, I stopped eating meat cold turkey. Alot of people think they need meat also to be healthy. Well..I've raised 3 children as vegetarians, and now they are adults, and still mostly vegetarian (they eat fish sometimes), and are as healthy as anyone, even more so. I am, too. It's just a matter of learning how to be a vegetarian, which isn't easy in this country (America). It's easy in India, where vegetarians are a majority, not a minority.

5. aretha (1517) | 3 years ago | i my self do not eat much meat. but some one has to. you take deer what if no one ate deer either they just shot them and leave them there or eat them. if they are not hunted there would be so many of them it would be a problem. same with any other animal if we don't do something with some of them then there would be so many it would cause problems for everyone. its part of life.

| 7. spottedleopard (7) | 1 year ago | Well for some people out there, like maybe about 13,000 people in this world do it because they try to be just like feline or canines, or bears. I know it seems inpossible, but it isn't. I know some people that're like that.
And I'm just interested to know, what would you do if you were transformed into lion or something somehow?
