what's wrong with "scotum"? |

| Scrotum is actually just a male body part used in a children's book that had raised the eyebrows of parents and educators. In the book "The HIgher Power of Lucky", the major character Lucky Trimble hears the word "through a crack on the wall". A friend of hers told her that "a rattlesnake bit his dog on the scrotum." The mention of this word in the book authored by Susan Patron led to the banning of the said book. Copies of it had been removed from the shelves of libraries in the US. What do you think of this now that stakeholders are still debating about the appropriatenes of the word's inclusion in a children's book. | | | | | |

| | Ok. So you think its inclusion is not suitable to the readers. | | | |

| | Oh. Do you think the author should change the bitten part, instead of being bitten on the scrotum, maybe change it to leg? | | | |

| | i think it depends on the age of children the book was written for. if its for kids under..say the age of 10 then the bite should take place on the leg etc. if its for kids over the age of 10 then scrotum is fine. they should learn the real names of their body parts as it is. of course it could be a matter of just plain storyline too. was being bitten in the scrotum somehow an important part of the plot? or just a gratuitous use of a usually "unmentionable" body part? | | | | | | |

| | It was mentioned I think on the first page of the book. I think the author here wanted to probably sound funny but was misinterpreted. | | | |

| | I don't see why a debate is necessary. It's the proper term for a body part, it's not used in any sexual sort of context, and it's in a book for children ages 9 and over. For me, there's no reason NOT to have it in the school library, particularly since it was a winner of the Newberry Medal. Then again, I am not a fan of censorship in any way, shape or form. | | | | | | |
