Lost Our Power Thanks to An Ice Storm |
| |
| Well a little after 8 p.m. central US time last night,2-24-07,our power went out after flicking most of the day because of freezing rain and high winds.I am at my mom's house, which is 20 minutes from where we live, using her computer. When we left our house three hours ago the power was still out. There are parts of town where we live that have power back on,but not us.There is talk that it might not be back on until Tuesday. We burned candles and used a rechargeable light thing.I used two stove burners for a little while on and off.Threw more blankets on the beds last night.By the time I got up at 9 this morning, after a very restless night, the temp in the house was 60.Not too bad considering the temp outside.I wanted to bring our freezer items to my mom's and put in her big freezer. It's cold enough outside that I could put our refrigerator items in a cooler outside, but not cold enough to keep the frozen items cold enough. The kids were pretty bored...let them play their Gameboy Advance game systems.Went to Walmart and Lowe's while we are here in this town to get more candles, some C batteries, and I wanted oil lamps and something for heat that was powered by propane. No one had either of those two things. So we'll just burn candles, use the rechargeable light thing, dress warm, and be bored until the power comes back on.Maybe we'll be lucky and it will be on when we get home.At least we have hot water and a gas stove.A family that my kids are friends with their kids had the power line pole fall into their house and mess it up a bit.So I know we are lucky compared to some.Well, depending on when the power gets back on,we might not be back to Mylot till Tuesday or Wednesday. | | Wow. Sorry to hear that you having such a hard time. I don't know what I would do if this occured here in New Jersey. I think that storm is heading this way too. It's really time to rethink the way we provide electricity to our homes. This never happens some places because the electric lines are beneath the ground. This same thin keeps happening over and over again. It's time to do something different. I wish you the best and hope that your power comes on soon. Lloyd | | | | | | |

| | Sorry you are having such a hard time with the weather, Steph. I've seen on the news it's a pretty bad storm out there, so guess I should quit complaining that its so cold here that I have to wear slippers in the house if I want to keep the doors and windows open. Years ago when Vegas was a small town, our power would go out with every storm, or any wind. This is a great time to connect with the kids, try playing cards or charades. Make up stories, one person tells part of the story and then passes it off to the next person. If your kids can handle it, tell ghost stories, you certainly have the atmosphere for it. Will miss you while you're offline. | | | | | | |

| | Thanks for your support.I think it's human nature to "complain" unless we see others having a harder time.We made it through this ok.The nights weren't easy because even with a lot of blankets,it was difficult to stay warm.I learned a lesson though,I am going to buy a propane powered heater as soon as I find one.We could actually go somewhere during the day for a bit,but not for long because of the dogs and cats.Anyway, got power back about 1:30 yesterday so it was out for 41 hours.Looking forward to catching up on here today.Hope you've been well. | | Good Luck kiddo! I think we're beginning to get some of theat weather moving here. It's snowing and raining at the same time and miserable. I haven't paid any attention to recent weather reports but it feels like it could turn into something. I just hope it doesn't build into what you have. | | | | | | |

| | Thanks for the message. So how did your weather turn out?We were lucky that all we lost was power. Some people lost more because of trees, limbs and even power lines and poles. The worst was an hour north of where we live.Hope you're doing ok. Steph | | | |

| | Hope your power gets restored soon? I feel for the guys out in the weather trying to fix power outages. I also appreciate their hard work and dedication. We've been lucky we've never had our power out for more than a few hours. I remember one year when the power went out it in the early afternoon. It was getting on towards dinnertime and the power was still out. Because of icey roads, going out to pick up something to eat was not really an option. We improvised by roasting hotdogs over the fire in our fireplace! Thankfully the power came on not too long after that. Hope you're staying warm and all is well! | | | | | | |

| | I think it must be hard on the guys trying to fix things too in the bad weather, but at least they get paid for it.I don't think they do as much as they can all of the time. Roasting hot dogs in the fireplace is a good idea. We're lucky that we have a gas stove but it's electric ignition. So the burners will work if I use a match.I already had stuff for chili for Sunday so that's what I made. Thanks for your reply. | | Oh no, I'm so sorry that you're suffering from a power outage due to an ice storm! I remember we had one in Missouri years ago where the power was out for at least 3-4 days. Back then I loved it because I got out of school and had a lot of time to read, lol. Now I would just go insane. I don't have anywhere else to go to use a computer if the power is out, and I just don't know how to cope without the internet nowadays! I'm totally addicted, and it would make me crazy to be offline for even 24 hours, let alone longer. I hope that your power is back on sooner than expected, or that you can at least continue to use the computer at your mothers' house for awhile! | | | | | | |

| | Thanks. It wasn't too bad, just got pretty cold Sunday night in the house. We just had to find places to go to stay warm and entertained. My aunt, uncle and Grandma had theirs out in St. Louis early December last year for two weeks I think. They didn't have to manage through it that long though because I think the second day into the outage, their fireplace caught fire in the chimney and part of their house got damaged. So they went to live in an apartment building with wires underground so they had power. Thanks for your reply. | | I didn't know you lived in Illinois. How far south of me?We were lucky in the tree area...nothing but tiny branches in our south yard.We do have two good sized trees on the south side of the house, really close,so I am glad they didn't hit the house. We have friends that had a power pole crash into the side of their house. The weather here has surely been strange to say the least for a few years now. Thanks for the idea of the black construction paper and crayons/chalk.Never knew that.I will get some in case this happens again. Thanks for the reply. | | I am sorry to here what happened to you. We had the ice storm here too but I was lucky. I have a wood burning stove so even if we would loose power we would be warm. I hope that your power is back on and everything is alright. | | | | | | |

| | Hmm .. I can see that was five days ago .. so I'm hoping the power is all back up and running now .. The problem these days is that when we have a power cut just about everything in the home grinds to a halt .. I get bored very quickly .. so tend to read if it's daytime .. and if it's still off in the evening it's early to bed and more reading ... I'm very lucky as my power company has a special programme for disabled customers .. and they make sure that we have heating and cooking facilities .. so far we've never had a power cut of more than about 4-5 hours though .. | | | | | | |

| | I know exactly what storm you are talking about. We didn't lose power here but it sure was freezing regardless. We are surrounded by woods and thankfully none of the trees fell although I know I'm gonna have loads of fun picking up branches come spring time b4 the 1st mowing. Glad to read you got your power restored. 8yrs ago when I was preggy with my daughter, we had a severe ice storm. We were living in a trailer park out in the country at the time. Power line went down right behind us and we had no power for 3 days/ no water for a week. The temp in our mobile home went from 70 to 0 in 5hrs. Pipes froze..the whole nine yards. Thankfully we had family living right down the street that had a gas stove and kerosene heater so we stayed there for a few days leaving plenty of blankets on the floor for the animals to tunnel in to keep warm. I went home several times a day to let the dog out, feed, and replace the frozen water with fresh. Naturally, like with you, we couldn't find any type of kerosene heater in any of the stores in our area. Ppl snatched them up within hours of store opening. We had a store put one on hold for us soon as they got more in and bought it on the spot. Sure came in handy over the years till we built our new house we are in now. I just sold the heater for 10 bucks few months ago being we no longer need it now that we have a wood-burning fireplace and boy do I love it. Keeps the house nice and warm w/o a high gas bill. | | | | | | |
