What is the Strangest Musical Instrument You've Seen in Concert? |
| |
| I know that Arcade Fire has used some unusual instruments to astounding effect in their music. What odd instruments have you actually seen onstage or in concert? I haven't seen anything more unusual than bagpipes myself, but I know in Australia they have some odd ones. | | Bagpipes - Oh Danny Boy the Pipes the Pipes Are Ca | | | | |

| | They used them because they *could*, right? Kazoos used to be quite popular with us flower children in the hippie era. Everyone had one, including me. If you could hum a tune, you were up and running! | | | |

| | A United Kingdom Ska band. [Spunge] played a song without their normal instruments and did a vocal version of center fold with just a triangle! it's very weird but very, very funny! It was probably the best track I've seen being performed without normal guitars, base, drums etc The vocals was also straight on the ball and you could tell that the singer was exactly singing and putting the effort in. Kudos ~Joey | | | | | | |

| | I have not seen any really strange ones, and by the way, who says bagpipes are strange? Around here they are part of the middle school band. I do have a cd somewhere with really strange music on different instruments of the world. There are written descriptions of the instruments, and the music. | | | | | | |

| | The strangest instrument I've ever seen has to be by a band from Cardiff In the UK called The Lost Tee Shirts Of Atlantis. For the bass they used an old bathtub with a broom pole going through it from top to bottom with a piece of rope too pluck, it was played stood up like a double bass, & the amazing thing is, it actually worked. The broom pole would pertrude a few feet above the tub & he'd slap the rope against it. Quite clever really :) | | | | | | |

| | It is called a lions roar, just search google image search for "lions roar drum" and you can find a good picture. I'd post the link here but i cannot copy and paste, and I am too lazy to type out the whole URL. Basically it is a drum with a hole that a string runs through, and when it pulls through it creates a roaring sound, which is pretty interesting. | | | | | | |

| | I had a college professor who could play a tune using a single leaf and it sounded a bit like harmonica. Here in Thailand and the neighboring countries you will discover strange musical instruments related to strings. I also saw one Aboringine's instrument called the didgeridoo as featured in one of Yanni's concerts. But I think the weirdest instruments I have ever saw to date are the Twelve Girls Band's instruments. They just look amazing to me. | | | | | | |

| | I know alot of people consider bagpipes unusual. My daughter used to be able to play them but it has been over 4 years since she has stopped band. I would have the strangest instrument would be the spoons. You actuatlly get two spoons, bang them against your knee and get a beat going. It takes alot of work to build up a talent to doing this. | | | | | | |

| | There was quite a famous stage show a few years back called Stomp or Stamp or something like that. I once watched a bit of it on television. Basically, the 'dancers' were dressed as builders with heavy boots on and would do a form of tap-dancing which included kicking dustbins (garbage cans) and buckets and scaffolding etc to create the beat. I've never really been into theatre or dance or anyhting like that, but the first time I saw this thing I was absolutely captivated. | | | | | | |

| | Don't know if you can call it an instrument ,but I had been to a concert,a duet, where several china-bowls with different levels of water was used alongside tabla. The bowls ,when striked with a mallet ,rings at different pitches. It's called jal-tarang in our country.Jal meaning water and tarang meaning waves. It's quite a simple musical instrument ,but produces amazing music.I gather it's only through practice that they know what level of water produces which note. | | | | | | |
