How long do car tires last?  email this discussion to a friend?

Ever wonder how long tires really last? (This was also posted by me at dormcheck about 10 hours ago and had only 1 view and no response. I've re-worded it here again.)
Out of curiosity I asked a tire dealer, years ago, how long tires last under normal wear and tear. It is 20,000 to 25,000 kilometers (12,400 to 15,500 miles) depending on the road surface mostly they are used on. Concrete wear them up faster. Tires and brakes are one of the most important parts of a vehicle when travelling. Note down your car's odometer reading when you change to a new set of tires.

It depends on the tire. Some will last only 20,000 miles. And some are designed to last over 80,000 miles. In the tire business, you pretty much get what you pay for. The average new car tire should last about 40,000 to 50,000 miles.

Of course, they need to be rotated regularly, balanced and properly pressurized. The vehicle will also have to be kept in alignment. Tires will normally last longer on a flat surface and driving on the expressway. This is because in city driving, tires will wear quicker with all the stopping and going. Driving habits have a lot to do with tire wear.

Really appreciate your input and the one prior to yours. The tire dealer I asked was when steel-belted tires were no so common yet. What was commonly used yet at that time were nylon-belted. Could that be the reason why mileage of tires now much longer? k5scottangel, if you read this, I'll appreciate another comment from you.

I think there are too many variables with how long tires last as it depends on the type and brand of tire you are using and how much you drive. The more you drive the more wear and tear you put on the tires. If you do not drive very much, the tires should last you longer. Of course if you run over a nail or broken glass or something you may ruin the tire. I think some tires can last longer than other tires if taken care of properly, like checking the air in them and having the tires rotated.
