theism vs. atheism | | there's an enduring debate again at filipinowriter.com on the validity of the opposing schools of thought. The arguments are full of wit although not as interesting because the arguments are traditional and stems from old and ancient justifications to support theism and at the other end atheism. I am a believer, so I i tried to join and comment on the discussion. Wrote that atheism is plagued with patent ambiguities. My father professes to be an atheist but I don't believe him because he fears death (for his loved ones; I don't know for himself) but in either case the fact is he fears death. I am of the opinion that atheists shouldn't fear death because they must corollarily profess among themselves that life would end up no where else but in the four corners of the grave. then came a realization that atheists are just proud and pedantic beings who can't accept among themselves that there is someone more superior to their beings. In filipinowriter, the debaters on the atheism side bank on science (wished they were also scientists) but most scientists alike are not pedantic like them. Even the great Albert Einstein was humble enough to accept his limitations, so who are they? maybe they're great enough than the greatest scientists ever lived. What ya think?

It's more typical for someone to ask us if we're sad or afraid, because, in our version of events, we'll be rotting in the ground, while in yours, there's a pleasant afterlife to look forward to.
Not to mention the fact that organisms that don't fear (or avidly avoid) death would tend to become extinct quite rapidly.
As for humility, is it truly humble to think that whatever created this vast universe and the all the complexities on planets like Earth has to be similar to us, and not only that, desires a personal relationship with us? Is it humble to assume an answer about the world's origins rather than admitting it is not fully known and continuing to investigate?
I'm not normally in the habit of making sweeping character generalizations about religious people (or any other group), and I respect that some people have a strong internal sense that God exists. I just thought I'd take a shortcut in responding to your assumption that atheists' non-belief stems from a lack of humility.
People on both sides of the theism/atheism debate can throw that barb at each other, which makes it rather a moot point.

| ebudae88 (69) | 3 years ago | got your point. theism stems from the fact that the improbability of explaining the order of the universe. Well-known scientists are amazed at the intricacies of the whole system albeit they're living/existing in order. One scientist I've read "bowed down" to the universal order that just can't be explained by human capacities. Another scientist opined that the tendency to explain everything from anatomy to the ever minute particle in the universe leads him back to where he started. As to the fear of death, although a natural instinct should be non-existent in a belief where life has been limited to one's lifespan. I'm not boasting of my belief of after-life if i may clarify. My beliefs have been previously tried by certain circumstances and conditions, however, as I was brought down to the fact of nothingness or the absence of purpose, I came to realize that it's worth clinging to the fact that there's such a being as God.If you don't mind, may I ask if you're a theist/atheist?

Tanya8 (1452) | 3 years ago | Yes, I'm an atheist. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear in my post. Thank you for the best response vote.
I'm still very curious about why you think this:
"As to the fear of death, although a natural instinct should be non-existent in a belief where life has been limited to one's lifespan."
Do you mind explaining a bit more? To me, it makes more sense that a person who believes he only has one life would value it highly and be very concerned about it ending.

Many atheists aren't scientists, and claim arrogantly that science can explain everything. The real scientists, whatever their beliefs or lack of, are much more humble and know the limitations of science. As somebody once said, "the more I learn, the less I know". On the other hand, some theists are just as arrogant, as their god is supposed to be the answer to everything, from the origins of the universe to the constipation of their neighbour's cat. Consequently, they tend to look down on godless people who rely on the mere experience of their senses and the conclusions of their reasoned mind to go through life.
As for the 'fear of death' argument, I think it was nicely answered above. We all have varying degrees of preservation instinct, and the natural avoidance of death that's ingrained in us and essential to the survival of the species sometimes turns into an irrational fear when we realise that our consciousness as we know it will go out forever.
