Many played him, many succeeded, some were horrid. I'm listing only the MOST recognizable actors: Sir Basil Rathbone, Sir Jeremy Britt, Larry Hagman (Dallas, I Dream of Jeanie), John Barrymore, Sir Michael Caine, John Cleese (Monty Python), Peter Cook, Sir Peter Cushing (Star Wars), Charton Heston, Frank Langella, Stewart Granger, Peter Lawford, Sir Christopher Lee, Peter O'Toole, Christopher Plummer, Nicole Williamson (Excalibur), Raymond Massey, Patrick Macnee (The Avengers) and so on.

Even though a lot of actors were good in the role, my favorite is Jeremy Brett. I think that was also the best series. I'm not even a Sherlock Holmes fan, but I enjoyed the series very much.

Jeremy Brett, no question. I've only very recently seen Basil Rathbone as Holmes, and I thought he was good. Better than I had imagined, but I still prefer Brett's portrayal. The only other Holmes I've seen is Nicol Williamson from The Seven Percent Solution. I think Brett makes Holmes more human.
