flying with an infant. |
| |
| We are getting ready to fly back to my hometown in Ky and the kids are flying with me while my hubby drives.(for medical issues he cant fly) My 11 and 7 year old fly all the time so that is not a big deal. However, I have an 8 month old who will be flying for the first time and I am nervous. I know that 1. people are going to be annoyed that they are on a flight with an infant 2. he probably is going to cry. Generally he is a very happy and playful kid and does not cry very much. But i would appreciate any tips that you may have for flying wiht a child this age. I did not start traveling with the other 2 kids untill they were at least 1. Help I dont want to be the idiot on the plane with the crying baby.... | | | | | |

| | My child flew frequently when he was a baby. I must have made at least 4 flights (including one lloonngg international one) before he reached the age of one. Depending on the plane that you're flying in, normally, the first row on the economy class has more room and some flights offer bassinets that you can attach to the front of you. Try and request for those seats. Also, during take-off and landing, allow your baby to suck on something...whether it's a bottle or a pacifier. That will relief the pressure on his ears i.e. no crying! :) Make sure you have enough snacks and toys for him. Include a few new toys he's not seen before. That should keep him occupied for awhile. Don't be anxious as your baby will be able to sense your anxiety. Just play with him lots, cuddle him and all will be ok. And if he fusses inspite of everything you try to do to pacify him, don't worry about the mean looks you get or what people will say. Just think, after this flight, you will not see these people again. Just concentrate on your kids and all will be fine. It's really not as bad as you think if will be. Just relax and enjoy the flight and I'm sure your baby will too. | | | | | | |

| | It s a very short flight .. maybe two hours witha time change but that is it. And i think we are in a small jet wich means more ear pressure at take off and landing. I know I have to calm down or it is going to be bad and hopefully I will. I am not going to give him his nap that morning so that he will be sleepy and hopefully sleep through it. I did go get a couple of new toys and put them away so that he can have something new. But it is hard to find stuff that does not make irritating noises at this age.. | | | |

| | You are right there will be those people who will act disgusted because there is an infant on board but those kinds of people really just have to get over it - I mean it's all a part of life!!! As for your lil one - does your infant drink juice yet?? If so then definitely keep that available to them and if not then keep water handy - it seems like it helps them to swallow when drinking which will release that awful ear pain we all get since your lil one can't chew gum yet!!! We did end up 1 time having to give our youngest some benedryl for a flight when he was an infant but that was mainly because it was a super long flight and he was very colicky at the time so it totally relaxed him and we made it through the flight with no problems at all!!! I wish you the best and hope that your older kids can maybe help you out with the lil one!!! | | | | | | |

| | he oes drink juices, as well as watered sprite from a sippy cup, so I will be taking both of those as well as his bottles. He hates a paciifier and does not suck his thumb so I am not sure what else i could take for the sucking, to help with his ears. Why has some doctor not come up with an ear drop to help kids in this situation. It would not hurt them becuase they are not ingesting it...oh well we will see how it goes. The girls are awesome with him and I knwo they will do all that they can. | | | |

| | Wow that is so wonderful to hear that your other children are so helpful to you - that always makes things easier for everyone!!! And I agree with you - they definitely should have some type of ear drops made for this situation by now!!!! | | | |
