What is Art? ...why do we create it? email this discussion to a friend?

I'm surprised no one has started this yet...

What is art?

Don't give me, 'whatever's at MoMa', or the latest NYC show... I mean what does art consist of?
What are the basic qualifications something has to meet to be considered art?

I propose that the intentions of the creator have no effect on whether or not something is art.

Meaning: An 80 year old with severe dementia might be able to produce something so amazing that it could be considered art despite not having, and not being able to have intentions to produce art. Or... A perfectly "sane" and "normal" individual can try and try to produce art, and have just a string of/fails.

I also propose that art is not purely a socially controlled subjective animal.

Meaning: If a majority of folks say its art, its not necessarily art (though there's a good chance it probably is).

Finally, I propose that a major facet of art is originality.

P.S. I'm talking about any type of art, be it music, poetry, literature, painting, or what have you. Feel free to argue that there are different qualifications for each (I personally don't think there are).

In my opinion art is something very subjective. A lot of the times people need to die or something happen to them before their work is considered art and yet before that they just think of it as junk. I think in a way everything is art ad everything has a bit of our soul in it, from the way we make our food to the way we write and etc. You can buy a canves paint your heart out and have it considered junk and yet someone just got bored did a few lines but hey somehow in the middle it was considered great and voila art. It's a very subjective thing, it depends on what everyone sees in it even the artist themselves. I heard that once there was this guy that had an art exhibition and one guy bumped it over, it was tins of his poo, he sued the guy for destroying his art, ewwww. A lot of the times if you have friends in high places it can be considered art quicker then if your a nobody.
