Have times really changed? Or are people generally the same? |
|
I just would like to hear what you think. I think that people have really just stayed the same as the calander changes. People alway say kids today are bad, etc., but I argue that they have been the way they are forever. I mean, billy the kid was called the kid for a reason. People only lived into their 20s and 30s centuries ago, so the bad was done young. What are your views?

2. ycswid (193) | 3 years ago | I don't think that kids today are "bad" but I do think that times have changed. Parenting is not taken as seriously by more and more people. No stay at home parents anymore often means less guidance. Less guidance can only lead to problems. I don't think it ends with the parents though.
I really think that society in general has failed children. For the last many years children have been told "You can do anything" Well I'm sorry to burst your bubble but that's just not the case. Different people have different aptitudes and even different likes and dislikes which will lead them in particular directions.
There was a study done recently that stated that college students are more narcissistic than in previous generations. They are self-centered and as such I believe will make even worse parents than their own parents were. This is going to spiral out of control if we don't start to care about one another.
On an interesting side note I posted the other day asking if you could see evidence of people caring about each other and not surprisingly received no responses.

3. Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | A part of me says that times haven't changed -- only technology. No matter the times, humanity has always managed to come up with ways to hurt, maim, and kill each other. In this regard, only changing technology has determined just how this is done.
Another part of me does sense that people seem to be more selfish than in more recent times...say, in the last 100 years. I don't know if this is so, or if I am just getting older and my perceptions of reality are changing.

buldwgz (892) | 3 years ago | Interesting thoughts. Selfish as in starting a war so that others can remain slaves? Or taking their family up and moving for merely the idea of gold? I wonder if those are selfish. Or even further back when the story of the "good Samaritan" was a major impact on the listeners because NO ONE stopped to help others. I wonder what is selfish?

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | I'm not sure I follow you, buldqwz. I guess I'm not familiar with the references you are making. Please elaborate.
| |
|
|
buldwgz (892) | 3 years ago | elaborate? I am not sure that I need too really. People are now selfish and have always been selfish. They say fear keeps them from helping others, but that is just an excuse and we all know it.

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | Thanks for the elaboration. I can see where you're coming from, but I didn't get the "moving for gold" analogy. By any chance, does this refer to the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow?
| |
|
|
buldwgz (892) | 3 years ago | "Moving for gold"..I was referring to the gold rush..you know, going to where there was a hint of gold, to strike it rich...with no real concern for your family. That is selfish, I would say.
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | While some may 'move for gold' for selfish reasons, I imagine there were some instances where the people hoped that the move for gold was going to help their family situation.

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | But does the calendar really move? Isn't the calendar, in fact, just a way for us to track the passage of time, when in fact, time doesn't move? Or does it?

5. bevvy22 (136) | 3 years ago | Oh, I have to agree with you. I hear people constantly stating how times have changed, but in reality, when I think about it, the calander changes, but that is all.

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | That is what I stated earlier. All that changes is technology. Unfortunately, the bonehead who started this Discussion must have a giant chip on their shoulder, and can't see what I'm saying.

7. Erilyn (533) | 3 years ago | People are the same as they ever were really if you think about it. The same things that motivated people hundreds of years ago are still in evidence. The only difference is the way they go about getting what they want. And of course we hear about things more often because of the media.
