Matisse or Picasso?  

I was always impressed by the talent of Salvadore Dali. The sheer imagination to create such paintings is awesome, without considering the great ability to put that imagination onto canvass so effectively. The man himself was far from sanity, but his talent was beyond doubt.

First of all "BEST" is relative, subjective, and often deeply, invidually personal.
With no real offense to "CRITICS" I suspect each thinks They are THE BEST.

While I agree in part with asylum,about a choice he suggests, I think "Insane" isn't something WE can prove, nor does it matter.

One of Dalis greatest abilities throughout his life was to create "pictures" within pictures, often totally involving the viewer in multiple perceptions and interpretations.

I have to believe however that their truly isn't a "right" or "wrong" answer to this Q. Assume for a moment that NOT being a "Critic" one enjoys neither style, Fauvism or Cubism. What then??? Would that deny the possibility that any Artist outside of those two styles was/is a hack? A no talent amateur?

I prefer Edward Hopper the social realist.

Well I think Andy Warhol had a great influence on 20th century art.

I think it probably was Matisse. He was a great colourist as you say. Some of Picasso's later work did go off the boil a bit.

Describing Picasso as a wacky cubist is a bit limited. I don't think you can pick either Picasso or Matisse. They each had a huge influence. Many like both and many don't like everything they made. So really I think it's impossible to choose.
