I'm not asking to see who's 'the coolest" or anything like that. I'm curious as a mother of 3 teens. I know I drank at an early stage, simply because at 14 I was being mistaken as a 20 something. I used to actually buy booze for the seniors in my school and make $20 a bottle off them! LOL

I am curious because I know my kids sneak alcohol once in a while at parties and such but of course as a parent its a LOT different. I get concerned about so many things that any parent would... safety being the biggest concern but also that they're so young, yet I recall I was about the same age when I started to dabble.

Oddly enough.. because I drank at such an early age... by the time I was 21 I could have cared less!

How old were you when you had your first alcoholic drink and party?

I tried some Apple Barrel Schnapps when I was fifteen.
Just the shot-size bottles, one for me and one for my friend.
We thought we were cool. Didn't make it a habit tho.

I was 18 when I had my first alcoholic drink....unless you count the time when I was about five and picked up my grandfather's can of beer, thinking it was a soda, took a drink and told him his coke tasted "yucky"!!! LOL

I had my first drink when I was 17. I was a freshman in college and I had just started school. Me and a few people had gone into town to the local pub for pizza. The bartendar knew the guys we were with so he offerred me and my girlfriend a free drink. I didn't drink much my freshman year.. I usually only had two or three drinks when I went to a party. I started drinking a lot more after my sophomore year of college..

I was good.. I never threw parties in highschool or when I was home on college break. My mom would have killed me if I did.

Ok, I'm starting to feel like a real alcoholic here! LOL I know I was young. My kids are young too. But it's truly not like we're a big drinking family here. I rarely have alcohol in my house even! Usually at Christmas I buy some... generally 1 case of beer that lasts until like freaking summer! LOL And a couple wines, etc. I do enjoy a glass of wine now and then but that's even very infrequently.

Well I'm not proud of the fact, but I was 14 or 15 and was at a party that was unsupervised and alcohol was being served to those with a parental note. My parents of course had no idea that the party was unsupervised as I had told them it was. My boyfriend was the one getting me the drinks. I was grounded when I got home of course as well I should have been.

With so much peer pressure that goes on it's never to early to talk to our children about the importance of staying away from drugs and alcohol. I hope through this discussion that you will gain insight as to what to look for and be able to communicate the importance of staying away from such things.

I don't let my children go to parties, birthdays are the only ones they go to and those are supervised by parents that I trust. I feel that you can't be to careful. I know that my children sometimes sneak sips of wine coolers here and their at family functions, but I had better never catch them drinking, or they will be grounded until 18.:)

Their is no reason for children to try and grow up so fast they will be adults before they know it. Hopefully I have done a good job in raising them to be responsible and know the difference between right and wrong. Peer pressure is a terrible thing, but strong kids I believe can avoid it to some degree and with the help of their parents support.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree... kids are truly tossed to the wolves early now. But my problem was as I was thinking about it and being a normal worry wart mom I started thinking "ya know smarty pants.. you were about the same age doing it too.. so it probably isn't so abnormal". Of course we seem to be so much better educated now in days about that stuff too.

When I was making my confirmation it was compulsory to take the pledge not to drink alcohol until I was 21 years old. I always thought that it was a mortal sin if I broke my pledge but I broke it when I was 20 years old. I was out with my mum and dad and I asked for a babycham. I was just testing them but sure enough my dad bought it for me. I don't really like alcohol but I do indulge in the odd bottle of WKD (blue vodka).

i have been around alcohol drinks all mylife had wine on specail occasions and by the time i was 10 the odd beer with dad while fishing so by the time it became popular in school was no big deal. I never felt the need to sneak my parent sstuff casue they woudl get me soem if i asked and it was an amount they felt i could handle
I treated mine the same way and do the same things for them as my parents did for me and it has worked really well.

I was the youngest in my group of friends (although we were all in the same grade) and I think I had my first taste of alcohol (beer and really cheap, horrible rose wine LOL) when I was either 15 or 16. Didn't like it much. I know that I was either 16 or 17 when I first went to a bar (a local joint that we actually went to more so we could dance than drink... there was little to nothing to do activity-wise in our town back then). Legal age here is 18. I easily passed and some of my friends already were 18. My dad didn't like it that I went but I was honest and talked to him about it. He told me (1) Don't drink beer and, if you do, drink it from a glass. Nice girls don't drink right out of the bottle (LOL) and (2) Keep your drink in your hand at all times. If you can't, then order a new one when you sit back down. He also said, "And I'm telling you now -- if you get caught in a raid, don't you call me to come get you... I'm gonna leave you there to learn your lesson!" I knew he wouldn't but I know it made him feel better to say it loud;)

My older daughter is closing in on 17 but thankfully doesn't drink yet... the reason being, when she was a bit younger she was hell-bent on tasting a glass of wine that I had with dinner one night. I told her she wouldn't like it but she really wanted a taste. She barely wet her lips with it, pronounced it "disgusting" and started to eat her dinner. Well, within about 15 minutes, she was sick LOL I think she over-thought the taste of the wine too much because she didn't even have so much as a mouthful to get sick on! But now, she readily admits that she's terrified to even try alcohol because there's no way she'll get sick in front of her friends or anyone else for that matter. I guess that's not such a bad thing -- from a Mom's perspective:D

LOL.. I"m agreeing with you on the mom's perspective thing. Maybe I should put some ipecac in a little wine and see if that works? LOL Just kidding. I know I'm being a mom here.. but sometimes I really worry about it.

I worry too, hockeygal, believe me! My daughter has told me about several people she knows who have parents of the "if they're going to drink, I'd rather they do it at home" mentality. I don't approve of just blindly serving up alcohol to minors. Sure, lots of us (even here in this discussion) tried it when we were underage, and I think that's normal behavior in many places, but I certainly don't condone supplying it to young people. I definitely worry about her going to a party where the parents not only allow it to come through their door but are also willing to buy/supply it. I find that frightening -- especially since they are at the age where several have gotten off their probationary licenses and can now drive without supervision. Yet another thing added to Mom's "To Worry About List"!

I think I was 13... it was the summer or it was when I was in 8th grade. Hey it was there and my friends and I just tried it. Who knows why. But when I was 21 it was not that big of a deal either. I even went out with my mother for dinner that night... she knew what was going on. Partying was over for me at that point in my life.

My mom let me have a drink when we were on vacation. I was about 15. I was all excited to drink it but just one didnt do anything and it didnt taste very good so i lost interest until I was 17. Then I drank a lot one time and got really sick lol. That stopped me for a while hehe

My first drink was at age 3. I had asked my parents about the wine they were drinking at a party, and so they poured me my own glass to try it out. I never did finish it... but that wasn't the point. The point was that it was always available for me to try if I wanted to, and so that by the time I was a teen, alcohol wasn't a novelty for me.

I don't really remember how old I was when I first started partying and drinking too much. lol. I think I was about 15 or 16. It was also usually at my place.. my dad knew my friends and I would be out drinking anyways.. so he was happier knowing we were at his house than in some park somewhere.
