cat that doesn't use the little box consistently |
| |
| Sometimes she uses it, sometimes she doesn't. And I can't figure out why. I make sure to keep the boxes clean, so it's not a matter of not using it if it's dirty. And I don't think it's a urinary tract infection because she usually does it right next to the box. Plus about a year ago she was doing the same thing and we took her to the vet and there was nothing physically wrong. But she's continued the behavior. We've tried everything we can think of. We make sure the boxes- we have 3 cats and 3 boxes- are always clean. They are in different parts of the house, so there's always one nearby. We have tried to catch her using the box and praise her and give her cat treats for using it. I don't think she's made a connection between the two, though. Anyway, I'm out of ideas. Anyone got any other ideas for me? Kelly | | | | | |

| | I suppose if you cant solve why, you could put plastic down that protrudes around the litter boxes and paper and then the box so that there is a water proof easily cleaned up area round each one. | | | | | | |

| | I think maybe you are right about her trying to mark her territory. But how do I keep the other two cats from using one of the boxes? Kelly | | | |

| | That's a tough one. I don't know where you keep the boxes, but try and keep this one some where private and only let her have access to it. this requires some constant attention and training for awhile. Pick her up and put her in the box. Take her paw and do the scratching movement for her. Then take your other two cats and do the same thing in the other boxes. But not that one. Everytime i move, which i do a lot, I do that with my cats to let them know where the box is and that they can use it. Hopefully after awhile, they will get the idea of which box they can use. | | | |

| | Ours did it because she had diarrhea.. Have you changed the litter you use? Maybe she doesnt like it. Have you talked to the vet recently? I wish I knew what to tell you but everything you've did would be what I suggest. | | | | | | |

| | It's the same litter I've used since she was a baby. It's been a while since I've talked with the vet, so maybe it's time for another trip. I did take her to the vet about a year ago and they couldn't find anything physically wrong. The vet thought it might be anxiety and gave her medication for that. Like, valium for cats, or something. It didn't help. I'm all out of ideas. Kelly | | | |

| | My Waffles is like that. Ever since I bought my Columbus cat home from the shelter, Waffles seemed to resent him and left a daily, smelly "present" on my sunporch floor. I cleaned the mess immediately and since the floor is old and needs to be replaced, dumped a few drops of Chlorox on the soiled area. Anyway, I read somewhere that once that resentment ends, the cat will continue to use the litterbox. I bought another litterbox and placed it in the sunporch. Both cats use it. Recently, I've noticed that Waffles craps in it, but only if she's the first one to use it. I line each litterbox with newspapers and change them often, which is after a cat craps in them. | | | | | | |

| | It could be so many things. One is territorial. Yes, female cats do spray to mark territories if there are other cats. I had this, and that is what the vet told me. Or, it can be that she does not like the litter. They are fussy. You keep it clean, so that isn't it. Last, they can develope these habits, and it is hard to stop. It can come from fear, a move, or a change in the house hold. I hope you can get this solved somehow. I had a cat for 12 years that ran downstairs to the litter box, scratch in it, ran up stares peed on the carpet, and then ran downstairs and burried the clean sand. I have a male cat now, he poops and then scratches the wall and leaves it out in the open. Then the little girl cat goes in to cover his poop. They are strange creatures. Ya have to accept and love them as is. Use vinegar to remove the smell to stop her from that area of making. | | | | | | |

| | Maybe try switching to a different litter, she may not like the texture or smell of the litter. Another possibility, one of the other cats may have used it, and she doesn't like to use it after it's been used by one of the other cats. Or, if it's one of those hooded ones, try removing the hood. If not, try putting one of those hoods on it. Or, you say it's clean, but maybe it's just not "clean" to her standard. Cats are so weird, hard to figure them out sometimes... | | | | | | |

| | It's the same litter we've always used. She's about 7 years old but has had this problem for only about a year. Do you think trying a new litter at this point might help? Kelly | | | |

| | Hi kelly3. I used to live with 0 cats at one time and managing the cat's toilet was one hard job! The thing that I found about my cats was similar to yours that is they would only use the litter box if it was clean. I also found out that the way to teach those kitties are to catch them red handed. Once caught, they must be punished on the spot and due to that they would remember not to repeat the same bad behavior. Hope that helps :) | | | | | | |

| | I know you said that the boxes are clean, but have you considered a self-cleaning box? I know they are a bit pricey but it may be worth the investment. Or maybe she is just having a kitty emotional crisis and this is her way of getting your attention. If she;s the type of cat that likes to cuddletry holing her more? Good luck! | | | | | | |

| | Maybe a self-cleaning box would be useful. They are costly. But it's a possibility. Kelly | | | |
