hand me downs not always a good thing! |
|
When my daughter was about five months old, my sister in laws sibling sent me a box of her daughters clothing that they had grown out of. At first I was really touched by the thought of it since we dont know each other and havent exchanged any words. I know she is not well off but it did not prepare me for the condition of the clothes. Every item either had very large dark stains on it and/or was so faded and worn out that you could see through the fabric in places. I would never give a bunch of clothing this used to someone I knew who wasnt even asking for stuff in the first place. I know she meant well but its like, come on, doesnt she realize how terrible the clothes look? It was almost insulting. I didnt know what to do with them, I didnt want to throw them out or give them to goodwill in case she wanted them back some day so I had to put it in the closet for now. Would you give such shabby clothing to someone you knew?

I also would never give items of clothing like this to anyone, I have given hand me down clothes to my family and friends babies but they were all in great condition as I had planned to have more but then had to have a partial hysterectomy.

Melizzy (966) | 3 years ago | Here's a novel thought: She gave you a gift out of the goodness of her heart. She may not have been able to afford any better and in her world, these clothes may have been just fine. It's the sentiment. No, you didn't ask for them. So, if you didn't ask for them and she sent them out of the goodness of her heart, why are you complaining? Leave them boxed up, and let it go. It was a nice gesture, even if the clothing was shabby. Focus on the intent, not the actual gift.

Those very same clothe will be cherished as the homeless shelter for play clothes. I know I was there for over a year. It is sad to see when kindness is torn to pieces. Blessing come when you give from the heart.

2. ladymoonstone143 (1287) | 3 years ago | There are just people who think they are thoughtful enough to give but doesn't check if they should bother to give the items without checking the condition of these items first. I would be so mortified if I gave somebody these kinds of items. Even when you donate something, it always say "to make sure that it is in good condition and can be wore".
One thing to remember is that whatever you give will reflect how you take care of things and I always make sure they are in good condition or clean whatever the item will be.

3. Sasselle (581) | 3 years ago | Is it possible that she didn't realise of the condition of the clothes?? My eldest son had so many clothes that I didn't know what to do with when he had finished. Yes I could have kept them but there was at least 10 boxes of clothes just for him up to the age of 1!!
I ended up giving most away to friends with babies and to the local hospital - I had them in storage for awhile after I washed them but because of this they seemed to have stains appear and they looked awful. I was so embarrassed!! I ended up getting them all back and doing yet another wash for them all before i could hand them over.
I usually only hand over stuff that I'd be happy to receive. Baby clothes only last so long before they look shabby and then they go straight to the bin.

4. mystic2mom (164) | 3 years ago | Nope, never. I always try to only pass on the best of my kids clothes. I would never want tattered stuff to come to me, so I would extend that courtesy to anyone I handed my stuff down to.

6. maddysmommy (10990) | 3 years ago | No, I probably wouldn't to any family member if my sons clothing were badly stained or torn. I would be too embarrassed to do that. However, in Samoa, (where we lived for six years) our neighbour had seven children, one of them was the same age as my son and he didn't have many clothes. He usually wore the same clothes three-four days a week. I decided to give him all my sons hand me downs (even the stained ones) so that he could use them around the home and when they played outside.

8. hockeygal4ever (5357) | 3 years ago | I've had people do that too. I think they mean well but just don't take the time to really look and realize what condition the stuff is in. I'd make sure I ask if she wants the stuff back when you're done or if it's just yours now and if it's yours just toss them. Figure she means well, no harm done and no feelings hurt. I do understand though. I had a friend do the same thing. Her cousin, who's a millionaire, had bags full of clothing. Most of it was so out of style and old and then a bunch was actually full of bugs because she had put them in her garage! I about died. Tossed them all in the garbage without even looking at the others!!!! End result, I sent a thank you note and told her how thoughtful she was for thinking of us. She felt like she had done a great thing. And the garbage dump was added to! LOL No biggie.

9. villageanne (5888) | 3 years ago | We never had much money when we were raising our children either but we still threw away clothes that were stained really bad.I would never give stained clothes to anyone. We dont even give them to charity. We only give clothes to charity that we would purchase ourselves. I just cant imagine anyone giving away clothes that were stained that bad. It is amazing what kind of clothes people do give to charity though. We always go through them and if htey are stained or have holes in them we just throw them out because nobody wants to buy stuff like that and if we hang up trash, nobody will bother to come back .
