Have you ever been curious about Sumo wrestlers? |
| |
| A recent discussion of mine actually brought up the idea of how sumo wrestlers can even remain around with their size, etc. Here's a bit of information on how Sumo's train and how, even though they're "fat".. they're quite in shape! The practical training is handled with great regularity and strictness, and that is today still the case. This practical training is divided into three parts. The first part involves exercises for building physical strength and flexibility. These include calisthenics and weight training. The second part involves a strict diet that on the one hand promotes muscle strength and on the other increases corpulence. (A thick paunch and mighty rolls of fat are essential prerequisites for a good wrestler. A skinny sumotori[wrestler] would never be popular with the public or, what is more important, gain the favor of the press; concave charms bring more money here than mighty biceps.) The third part involves associated exercises. These include special breathing drills, various ascetic practices, cold rubdowns, exercises in sitting still and in patience, hot baths, etc., such as are found in all kinds of Japanese sports. During training alcohol, tobacco, and sexual pleasure are more or less forbidden | | Sumo Wrestlers | | | | |

| | I went to a sumo match last year in NYC, an exhibition. It was a bit disappointing because most of the wrestlers were 'only' about 400 lbs, and most weren't Japanese. But in a way it made it more interesting. It was a fun sport to watch live; usually on TV you only see a 15-second clip, and it's just for amusement purposes. | | | | | | |

| | I have heard that the exhibition matches can't hold a candle to the real thing but the real matches are held, generally, only locally and for religious purposes, etc. It has become a lot more "dramatized" and become something more so for the money status but I guess they don't make much in general even though they are held in the highest honor amongst their people. I'd love to see a match though! | | | |

| | Even with all that training that they do, I am surprised that they are able to live a long time with all the weight they are putting on their heart. I am sure they have to do some of workout routing or exercising to be able to stay strong and stay somewhat healthy. They can probably lift a lot of weight being that big and powerful. I am still curious about the lifespan of a sumo wrestler compared to an average person. | | | | | | |

| | Well, the average life span of an American is about 75 years and if you think about the size/weight difference that's really not a whole lot of difference for that amount of weight (69). I believe the life span of a Japanese person is somewhat higher then American, based upon the eating habits alone. The Japanese have the longest life expectancy in the world and last I knew it was around 80 or 82. I only know these things because in my work with the bank I had to do some life expectancy work ups for portfolios and such... not because I'm a walking trivia book! LOL | | | |

| | More misinformation. Sumo wrestlers are notoriusly short lived people due to their enormous caloric intake and the results. I can understand why you may wish to think they are in shape. But more importantly Barak Obama is not Moslem. | | | | | | |

| | Shows how much you know. They are far from being "out of shape" and their daily routines would put any average person to shame. Even their foods are closely monitored to give them the most benefit from the combinations they eat while training. But please, do argue every post I put up. I enjoy getting money off your posts. But perhaps you should spend less time defending the MUSLIMS and more time checking your facts. | | | |

| | I don't mind you making money off of my responses. You obviously need it after spawning. It is known in Japan thst the wrestlers art short lived. Checking facts? You don't know homeopathy is not a proven method of treatment. That CORRECTING you about your incendiary statement about Barak Obama, IS NOT defending Moslems. He is not Moslem and you should Stop deseminating FALSE and ERRONEOUS information. Although I would defend a Moslem over your ignorant and self aggrandizing comments. Are you a Sumo wrestler? Barak Obama is not and he is not Moslem. | | | |

| | Now that you mention Kaido's name I do recall hearing about him. He was quite a rising star and well loved in Japan! Can you imagine the pressure those knees take just carrying around the weight alone!? Can't say as I envy them! LOL I've only seen short blurbs of matches or some home videos from a Japanese friend regarding the matches but they are truly very highly revered in Japan. It's almost like they're a God to the people. They make very little money doing their wrestling but I guess they have "perks" that create a somewhat comfortable lifestyle for them. Still not sure I'd want to carry around that weight at all. | | | |

| | There were some people from Japan lately, they wanted to make a documental about Baruto, to film his home there etc. When his mother visited him in Japan, she was very surprised how respectfully she was treated there, just for being 'Baruto-mom'. Besides, I saw, your discussion is tagged as 'mature content'. I wondered why, until I understood it's because 'sexual pleasures' you mentioned... | | | |

| | LOL.. I had no idea it was tagged adult. It must pick up on the certain words that would make it so. I guess it's good to know it's at least tagging certain words?! LOL Not so sure how "adult" sumo wrestlers are though! | | | |

| | Wow, this is really interesting. I was recently having a discussion about Sumos in another forum where I write. This is a great bit of information. As far as the sexual pleasure thing, I remember the trainer in Rocky telling him that "Women make your legs weak." But my personal take on this angle is that lack of sexual satisfaction makes a person (male or female) more aggressive. | | | | | | |

| | of course i think everyone has been curious about these giants! you think why do they even wrestle when it seems they cant even carry their own weight! but yeah ive heard they have a lot of discipline too. and as much it is about stamina, its about concentration too. | | | | | | |

| | I think that's a lot of it for sure... we are curious because it goes against everything we're "told" about physical fitness. After reading a little on it and talking to a friend who is from Japan there is a lot involved to the entire subject and it's even more intriguing to find out why it even began, how it works and how little they make as "professionals" in that field financially. Yet it is such an adored position in their country that it is a high honor to be known as a true sumo wrestler. Amazing indeed. | | | |

| | im amazed on how big there body is. i saw one documentation in national geographic about how hard and rigorous the trainings of all the sumo wrestlers in japan. they are number one when it comes to discipline. when i wsa young i though this sport is just too easy because all you need to do is push your opponent outside the ring but the truth is this is one of the hardest sports to master. i love asian sports they dont just talks about physical strengts but also discipline and sprituality. | | | | | | |

| | So very true!!!! I used to think the same.. it was a matter of who was fattest. But when I looked into it I was so amazed. I agree, there seems to be a level of discipline involved in Asian sports that is well above average and involves all areas of our body, including mental status. Other parts of the world might learn something from it all perhaps? We could hope! | | | |

| | Thanks. I have to say years ago I truly had no clue. Up to just recently I really wasn't completely up on it all but then I had interest from a friend from Japan that I've spoken with and he and I talk sports a lot. He commented on Sumo wrestling and I can pretty much say anything with him so I asked him, in a nice way.. lol... how these huge fat men can be considered so "athletic" and highly revered. He laughed and provided me with some info and I was hooked. Now my mission is to truly see a real match! I think that would be wonderful! | | | |

| | I saw a match in Tokyo years ago. It was awesome! Most of these wrestlers start training when they are kids. They each represent their training home and probably show more pride and dedication than any other sport could think of giving. There is no trades, free agency or anything like that. It would really be something to be part of something like that. | | | | | | |

| | It would be wonderful to experience indeed! I'm envious! And I agree, the style is almost unthinkable to anyone in other countries simply because of what "professional" sports has become on average in most countries. This sport has remained fairly untouched, although I have heard that there are many more "training facilities", I forget what the name of them are, that have popped up around the country but for the most part it's known which ones are just there for entertainment of the "rich" kids who want to be sumos. There are only a handful that are quality training facilities I guess. | | | |
