Is Kindness Taught Anymore? |
|
This morning I came across another uplifting post from a good friend urging us all to leave nice comments for eachother. Another friend with every post is offering a tip for newbies or something to help us in our lives at home or here at myLot.
Yesterday I saw a generous one from a friend offering help with English if someone wanted to ask her. Everytime I see these posts it lifts my spirits. People*do* still care about eachother.
The time I was proudest of my daughter was when her sixth grade teacher told me, "at an age where people are entering cliques and ridiculing others, your daughter is kind to*everyone*" I was proud the kids' grades were good, but in my mind, kindness was the primary lesson I wanted them to learn.
I admire a quick wit and sharp intellect, but still nothing impresses me nearly so much as a big heart. If we could just remember to think before we speak or type: how does that sound? I know I have failed here in this regard at times.
Even in political or religious differences, there is unfailingly a reasonable way of stating things. I got up in the same mode as my friend: let's be kinder from this day forward.
Outwit, outplay and outlast -- that's for Survivor.

1. omega007 (7249) | 3 years ago | How right you are, cremechese. My parents taught us to be kind since we were kids. And even now as adult(?), we still show kindness and politeness to everyone we meet or see. Hope my future kids will be the same as me. and hope I can be able to taught them they way my parents taught me.

cremechese (4503) | 3 years ago | I'm sure they will, Omega. You'll be a good example. "Children learn what they live" may sound like an overused cliche, however it's true.

2. caribe (1875) | 3 years ago | It just makes the world a much better place to be kind to each other. When you are kind to someone it makes you both feel better and this needs to be taught to our children so that they will be kind as well. Why bash each other, when with that same energy one can be kind to each other and it feels so much better?

cremechese (4503) | 3 years ago | Thank you, Caribe. There is often the urge to be the winner or have the last word. I've been guilty of it many times over. The truth is nobody honestly does win in those situations.

3. linda345 (1862) | 3 years ago | That was a nice post from your friend. I think in general most people deep do care and are kind. I think you are right about we should be thinking more about how does this sound before we speak or type. Even in myLot, we can hit the preview button first and edit what we want to say. I will jump on your wagon of kindness if it is ok with you.

4. bluewings (2393) | 3 years ago | That is a beautiful post Cremechese.I too feel that the greatest virtue that a person can have is a big heart. You have very good reason to be proud of your daughters. A person's greatness and wisdom can't touch as many souls as kindness can.A beautiful heart,to me,is much more attractive than a beautiful mind or face. It's the beauty of the soul that lasts us the longest and we should preserve it.I will consciously make an effort to try to be kind. Thanks for the topic.

cremechese (4503) | 3 years ago | Reminds me of the song "You Always Hurt the One You Love" -- not surprising since almost everything reminds me of*some* song. The trouble is, those dang loved ones are so close in proximity, lol. It's so easy to target them when you're in a foul mood.
I used to slam a lot of dishes on the counter and break things instead of slugging my (now ex) husband, lol. Goofy thing is now we're great friends. Why? Because we don't have to live together!

8. greengal (2946) | 3 years ago | Very thoughtful creme, I love myLot for this reason. People are kind and caring, but we do have the rude ones too, its only because they are there we appreciate the loving ones;o) Every place has to have some good and bad in it. It's nice to be grateful and kind than hateful and arrogant. Do good to others and it will soon come back to you. We all need to consciously express ourselves, because though this is a forum where strangers participate, our words can do more damage than we can possible imagine. The same works for good words, we may be making someone extremely happy! Thanks for the lovely discussion dear.

9. patgalca (6022) | 3 years ago | This discussion has really made me think. Why are some people NOT kind? Specifically, why am I such a b*tch? Now you say when we are angry and frustrated we take it out on those we love, but I have taken it out on my husband's friends. How did I become this way? My parents are/were kind and loving people who had many friends.
I would love to be kind to everyone I meet. I know the feeling would be wonderful to both myself and those I am kind to. So what prevents me from being like that?
Is it a result of being ignored by my siblings when I grew up, and they kind of still do. Is it a result of my abusive first marriage and my determination not be treated badly again? Is it because my baby's father abandoned us both leaving me to raise a baby from infancy to toddlerhood for two years on my own? Am I bitter?
Yet, I am involved in the church. I love all the people there. I feel a real part of a community with the church and the kids' school. When I jumped to assistance upon learning the girls' basketball tournament was a day sooner than anticipated, I ran over to the school with extra pairs of shoes and shorts for those girls who were not prepared. I went to the tournament. I drove some girls to the first tournament. Yet, when they purchased pizza for the girls no one offered me a piece. I must say I was offended and I told my daughter afterwards. Her response? "I know." So, I said to her, "Why didn't YOU offer me a piece of pizza?"
I don't hold this against the teachers. I will continue to help when I am needed because other parents are not as readily available as I am. Perhaps I feel bitter because MY kindness is not returned.
Interesting subject for a thesis.

cremechese (4503) | 3 years ago | Well, yeh. It's frustrating when you go out of your way for someone and it is not appreciated. Also, I can relate to some of this because my daughter's father dumped me as well. What a way to have to suddenly become a responsible parent, huh?
In my view, Pat, you have stepped up to the plate. You deserve to congratulate yourself in many ways. So I don't think you should be so hard on yourself if you're cranky now and then. In other words, hey you are*not* a b*tch lol.
