Smallville has got to be THE series for serious fans of superman. |
|
A lot of girls absolutely love Tom Welling. I have a different sort of facination with his character. He is a mixture of good and evil, bottled up.
Sometimes I have the feeling that he could go either way. Good, evil. Makes no difference. They pointed this out in one of the scenes where he's learning about his heritage from the Native Americans and trying to make some sense out of the glyphs on the cavern walls.
Lex even makes the interesting flip-side assumption, that HE is the saviour, and not Kent. I thought about that for just a bit and realized that he could very well be on to something.
Without Clark Kents powers, farm-bread family, and Kent man looks, he might have had a totally different view of how his life was meant to turn out.

1. merkava (1170) | 3 years ago | I don't think smallville is THE series for hardcore fans of Superman. I found it very mechanical and confusing when they added a lot of DC character in his story life at a young age. Half of those characters he should haven't even met! I think the reason why they introduced that type of storyline is to give smallville longevity because let's face it, it's hard to make a story on the young life of Clark Kent. You were right, girls love Tom Welling but not Clark Kent. I like the dynamics of their personality though. Lex isn't as evil as we thought and Clark isn't as good as he seems to be. They have a lot of dark secrets.

anewoldsoul (112) | 3 years ago | Bravo! A person who has a different opinion; I like this. Mechanical, you say? How so? I do agree about bringing in characters and plots that were never in the original script, but hey, it's an original view on the whole thing. At some point they would have needed to depart from what was already written, and create their own on-going plot. What they did was make the series so that from the beginning it would be tailor-made to add what they might need in the future. They didn't want to be ham-strung by technicalities.
I used to watch Lois and Clark. That was good. He was too dorky though.
I've always asked myself this question and I'm probably not the only one: How can you NOT recognize someone, just because they stop wearing glasses?! I go to great lengths to change my clothes, my hair, my entire look; and do people shake their heads, wondering who this new dude is? No. You'd have to be really out of it NOT to recognize that Superman is Clark Kent.
Now, yes they love Tom Welling, but Clark Kent really gets to them, too. In fact, I heard some chick saying something about this just a little while ago at a bar. Don't ask me what these two girls were doing discussing smallville, but...ah well, just don't ask is all. One girl said, "Oooo, I would love to have a guy like Clark Kent. That Lana girl is just plain stupid. Can't she see that he loves her?"

| bluviper (18) | 3 years ago | nice one right there... mechanical or technical is prolly a good term for that matter. the first 3 seasons was fairly laid out. but watching this 6th season turns out to be so obsurd! many things happnin within smallville and yet the world just shrug its shoulders and under mind smallville.. rockets have been launched graves digged etc etc. its out of control. i agree with you that i think the producers is havin a hard time stretching more stories to this season. at first i thought this whole series was just to show how young Kent grew up and ended in metropolis. so many sidelights.. it reverts to the very heart of the story.

anewoldsoul (112) | 3 years ago | I've been wondering the same thing myself. I think it would add a whole new dimension to the series. I have a feeling, though, the producers may never get around to it, because they would feel that it would bring their baby creation too close to the Superman movies and other stuff that had already been done.
I guess the appeal of the series is that it catches the humanity of Superman and lets us know that even though he may be bullet proof, and able to run faster than a speeding train, he still has struggles just as hard with issues that no amount of super powers could solve!

2. emeraldisle (8978) | 3 years ago | Well I watched some of the first season and then lost interest. I watched it now and then but not seriously until last season. I have enjoyed it. I like the fact that they show that Lex isn't all evil and power hungry. He had another side and that is fascinating. That he could easily have gone another way if he so chose but he decided not to. He wanted the power more then anything else. They have also shown that Clark is the product of his upbringing. If he'd have been found by someone like Lionel Luther I seriously doubt we'd like him at all. He would have been the ultimate villian not the good guy we want. More then that though they have shown the human side of Clark Kent, not just the super hero to be, but the fact that he has doubts, fears, hopes..he deals with everything the same way we do. He's not perfect and he makes mistakes. That is what makes it good in my opinion. They might not have stuck with the comic book stories but most shows and movies don't. They take creative license and sometimes it can work to their advantage.

anewoldsoul (112) | 3 years ago | Well, we find out later WHY Lex wanted power, or at least, a good chunk of the reason. Seems that either in the fifth or sixth season of Smallville, we are confronted with Lex's love for Lana. In several scenes, we learn that Lex has to choose between one path that will lead to destruction, and another that could have given him most of everything he's ever secretely wanted. The only obstacle in him getting this fantasy reality to come true, is that he would have to accept Lana's death on his own shoulders. What's crazy, is it seems no matter which way Lex turns, he cannot escape his future-a future where he will eventually be the one person with the power to hurt so many others. He tries, but these producers are crafty. Seemingly choosing for the sake of one he loves-in HIS mind, being the greater good, over his own happiness-he sacrifices a chance for redemption. I feel like I have a real understanding of where this character is coming from. Apart from being nearly bald at the young age of 27, I have an over-powering father whose shadow, I have lived under for entirely too long.

3. MsRetro (232) | 3 years ago | I recently got ahold of the first two seasons, and I enjoyed them a lot.
I think Lex is my favorite character. He's so sweet and earnest, and often oddly perceptive. But, he's also ham-fisted and cluelessly manipulative. And, you can tell that he really can't see anything wrong with his methods.
I'll probably grab the next season, too. It's good popcorn watching.

4. embattledsparkle (946) | 3 years ago | I like Smallville but I also really liked Lois And Clark The New Adventures of Superman with Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain. I was a huge Teri Hatcher fan and liked Dean Cain as Superman but man... ABC really screwed up the end of that series and they had some episodes that weren't that good.
Tom Welling makes a superb Clark Kent.

anewoldsoul (112) | 3 years ago | Before Smallville came around that was my SHOW! I used to videotape marathon runs of Lois and Clark on the weekends. Unfortuanately, good ol' Dad, decided that that space would be better served for taping football games...aye!!!
I'm kinda bummed that I never got to see the episode where Dean Cain and Terry Hatcher have their honeymoon. I missed it because of some event that popped up.

| 5. travisblink (52) | 3 years ago | I think smalville is a great show, but there are many differents regarding the comic strips, and the choice to increase the episodes produce a reduction of interest, I think they must find something else, what do you thin about?

anewoldsoul (112) | 3 years ago | For me, I could never get enough of the Smallville series. I want to see Clark grow into a man. He is, both on and off the set. I also want to see his other powers emerge. Flying would be cool, but I think that it would force the director in a direction that he's not willing to go.
