Cutting boards |

I just got a bamboo cutting board and boy do I like it over my plastic one. They say that the bamboo is bacteria resistant and better for you. What do you think of them? What is your favorite type of cutting board? I got mine for 10 at walmart and they cost around 25 at Bed Bath and Beyond. How much would you pay for one?

2. lilaclady (19768) | 3 years ago | I have never heard of a bamboo cutting board, I wouldn't have thought bamboo would be strong enough to take all the cutting from sparp knives, I will have to check them out as I have heard the plasticy ones are not real good...

3. Willowlady (8982) | 3 years ago | That seems reasonable for a cutting board especially of bamboo. I too would prefer it over plastic. Just too much plastic in our lives these days. Hope all this helps you with your new board. Bamboo is an extremely hardy grass that is easily grown and naturally replenishing resource. It doesn't have to be replanted after chopping down and is strong, durable, and pretty. Boards constructed of bamboo are fast (the hard surface makes it easier to work the knife) and durable. The boards absorb less liquid than maple wood and are typicaly easier to wash since the knive cuts won't be as deep or plantiful. Like other wood boards, they should not be soaked in water or placed in the dishwasher.
PROS: Crafted from narrow, laminated bamboo strips, these boards have become popular for everyday cooking because they function just as well as hardwood boards without all the extra TLC. They're lightweight and attractive enough to double as serving trays, and the hard surface means fewer nicks and slices that harbor bacteria.
CONS: Bamboo (which is a grass) is harder than wood, so it performs well, but your knives will need more frequent sharpening.
CARE: Compared with wood boards, bamboo won't shrink or swell as much when exposed to water, and you won't need to apply oil as frequently. Regular rinsing with warm water and mild detergent and an occasional sweep of mineral oil are enough to keep the sheen intact. With proper care, a bamboo board will last at least 10 years.

6. cremechese (4503) | 3 years ago | Oh, I've never seen a bamboo cutting board -- I don't get out much, lol. But I'm a cheapskate, so if it was $25 somewhere, I sure as heck wouldn't be paying*that* lol. I've just always had a wooden one, but to tell you the truth, I'm not sure what kind of wood it is!
