Woodstock...were you there???  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 91/100. mistymornster (1786) 5 years ago

Knowing the age and location of a lot of mylot members there will be a lot who don't know what the heck I'm talking about. Some from the US who are younger and have only heard of it only think that it was a weekend of naked people doing dope and stupid things. Ok, as in any group of young people there were those who did crazy things. Some od'd on drugs, lots got naked and danced in the mud, but boy did they have a time to tell their kids and grandkids about. They were a part of music history. Yup, I was there but with a crowd of people who didn't get as crazy as most and the only thing we did was smoke a little pot and drink a little beer but mostly we totally enjoyed the music. After reading a discussion here earlier this morning I became a bit nostalgic and looked up some information on Woodstock that I want to share with my fellow members. A lot of it is facts that I found interesting and after all these years didn't even realize. It's long but very informative.
********************WoodStock*****************************The police estimated that there were a million people on the road that day trying to get to the festival. A million people: 186,000 tickets had been sold; the promoters figured that maybe 200,000 tops, would show. That seemed outlandish, if believable. But no one was prepared for what happened, and no one could have been.
Although the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair took place August 15-17, 1969, the hype began much earlier. By early summer, Woodstock looked to be the super rock festival of all time.
Perhaps it was, but no one could have estimated the effect those three days would have on rock music and American pop culture. The festival actually took place in Bethel, NY, on Max Yasgur's farm about 50 miles from Woodstock. Woodstock was the original location since that was where Bob Dylan was currently residing. The change in location happened because of the fact that the music was secondarily important and the art was for the most part under produced.
In fact, no one comments about the art fair anymore, and a lot of people at the festival said that the community aspect was more important than the music. What makes this remarkable is that no other festival is referred to in this manner; no one speaks of the Monterey Nation, and especially not the US Festival Nation. Woodstock was all about being there.
It was much easier to be there after Woodstock had begun since so many people arrived that crowd control was next to impossible. The festival was then declared free instead of $18 for all three days. An aspect of Woodstock of which few people are aware is despite how it may have looked, it was a very calculated, organized, and commercial venture.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience was paid $18,000 and was the most received performance at the festival. After performing at the festival a band could start charging more for their time. Many of the artists participants never worked again for less than $10,000 to $20,000.
It would have been next to impossible to prevent the open drug use since it was estimated that at least 90% of those present at the festival were smoking marijuana, but it was in no way promoted by those in charge. The big point was not that pot was passed around openly, but that because there was a minimum of force and restriction, a huge crowd of people handled itself decently.
The promoters were smart enough to warn the masses about bad acid that was being distributed, not because they wanted to be hip, but because they were partially liable for what happened during the festival. The Woodstock Nation took heed of the warning, thinking that the warning was just as his as they were. It would not be fair to say that the audience was fooled about many issues, but rather that the necessary situations were explained to them in ways that they would understand. The two most important aspects of Woodstock were very clear: music and community. It was either for the music that the Nation came together, or just to be part of the Nation. Those that came just to be there certainly had a great time. To be with a group of that size with everyone feeling the same and having the same concerns would be next to impossible in the day without some sort of common theme. No one in this country had ever seen a society so free of repression. Although it was looked upon as a hip event, it has been estimated that maybe half the crowd was weekend hippies, out from Long Island for a quick dip in the compelling sea of freaks.

Hi Misty, I got married very young and missed out on woodstock,I have always felt that I missed a lot..I was a young married girl with 3 babies and a control freak for a husband at that time...Oh how i wish I could have gone there,Im sure it was a blast.I really hate to tell you how young I was when I married but i will..I was 15 and my hubby at that time was 17..I told someone that once and they called me trash because I was married so young, but back then we all did that..I think that is why there are so many young grandmothers now days.I was a grandma at 31 years old....Im just now growing up and you can bet if it ever happened like that again "I would be there".... I lobe all those singers however and I have all their CDs...I stll dress in jeans and tops just like the old times, maybe im just an old hippie at heart...Oh man I bet you did have some fun back then...

LOL...from one "old hippie" to another, I was 18 when I got married the first time and everyone thought for sure I was pregnant and had to. Were they surprised after that first year when I didn't have a baby! I have to admit though that it wasn't long after that first year that I did...lol...
Your right, at the time getting married seemed to be the thing to do! So we did and yes, we've all been grandparents for a long time but I think it's great because we can enjoy the grandkids longer and most of the time they even have great grandparents to enjoy and spoil them too.

I thought for the people who didn't really know the statistic part of it, some of which I really didn't until today, it would help them see that not everyone there was running around naked in the mud! lol...not everyone anyway!

I was too young to go to woodstock, and being in canada I wouldn't have gone anyway. I did get a chance to see woodstock in the movie theater though.

I would never have walked around naked though, it just never was me.

Well I didn't get to go...and it wasn't for lack of trying. I was only 9 the time. We had "hippies" living next door in an apartment complex. Mostly college students and professors. We would sit outside with them and they would all play guitars and smoke pot. Us kids of course didn't smoke we just sat and sang songs. One of the professors and his wife were going and they said if our parents agreed we could go with them in their camper. Well I begged for weeks to no avail (like I would let my 9 yr old go..lol) Well of course we didn't get to go. But they told us all about the music and how some people got "carried away" (literally). I can't imagine what a "learning experience" it would have been for a 9 yr old, and my sister was only 6...lol Oh well...I've lived this long I guess I'll just be jealous of everyone that went forever...hehehe

I did not attend the festival because I live in the United Kingdom, which would make it quite a journey. Nevertheless, I do remember the festival well and it was televised here and reshown several times. Even after all these years it is still the most significant pop festival that ever took place, and as you say it is a part of pop history.

Hi Mistymornster, thanks for the very interesting article. I am too young to have been there, but I can tell you that I am a big fan of the music from those days and of the revolutionary feeling as well. It is sad that those kind of music and artist have become very rare.

I didn't make it to Woodstock...it was too far, as I lived in Western Washington, somewhat North and East of Seattle in what was then a farm and ranch community called Woodenville (Unfortunately pronounced like "Wood-en", but named after the Wooden family, and pronounced VO - den,
the family was from Holland.
I did make it to the FIRST American Rock Festival, which was called
"The Sky River Rock Festival and Lighter Than Air Fair" held in 1968, one year before Woodstock, was held at Betty Nelson's Raspberry Farm and Commune (remember communes?) Known locally as "Betty's Farm" it was a wonderful place where free music was often performed. It (is?) was near Gold Bar, a small town at the foot of the Cascade mountains, near the Skykomish River. (Thus "Sky River Rock Festival)
Some of the bands and entertainers featured there included: Santana, Country Joe and the Fish, Big Mama Thornton,Allman Joy (Later called Allman Brothers)
James Cotton, and best of all: THE GRATEFUL DEAD!
The lighter than air part...was free hot air balloon rides! There are rumours that Pink Floyd played there...I do not remember them playing there, but to be honest, this WAS the psychedelic era...and I did indulge back then. Amazingly enough the promotional posters and artwork still remain, and are on the web.
MOST F**Kin AMAZING: The entire DEAD show was recorded on 1" master reel-to-reel tape...and YES! the tape yet exists! You can hear the complete GD show at Sky River! The history of America's first Rock Festival is viewable on the following site:
http://www.geocities.com and
www.historylink.org Google "Sky River Rock Festival"
for many links to this culturally significant piece of rock history.
