Does Sonia Gandhi belong to Nehru family?

I wonder when the people in the Congress party (in India) claim the ancestorship of Indiara Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and even Sonia Gandhi to Nehru family. I am not sure the Nehru family is following a patriarchal system or matrilenial system. To my belief, when Indira (priyadarshini) got married to Firoz Gandhi she had become a member of the (Firoz) Gandhi family. Her son Rajiv's family name is also of the Gandhi family. Obviously Sonia too could belong to that family. Then what is the logic of the Congress Party in claiming Rajiv's or Sonia's relationship with Nehru family. Can anyone explain?

I have actually not heard people actually claim Rajiv, Sonia etc. to be from the Nehru family. They use the term "Extended-Nehru Gandhi" family or they use the term grandson of Nehru, but don't directly use the term Nehru family.
So you are right, Sonia does not belong to the Nehru family, but you can say she belongs to the extended Nehru-Gandhi family.
Cheers!
