Ever Start a Home Repair and then Regret It? |
| |
| This morning (after a few weeks of nagging from my wife) I broke down and began a "thorough cleaning of the shower". How often do you really clean the shower thoroughly? It was sort of grimey. After scrubing the shower walls and glass door my wife still wasn't satisfied. There were nooks and crannies that still had grunge. Like in the lip of the door. So off comes the door. Of course the caulking needed redone. So scrap off the caulk. What I thought was a 1/2 hour job has now turned into a still unfinished job. I need to replace the rubber seals in the door. I have it pretty well cleaned but I need to seal all around the door again with silicone and I need to buy new rubber gasket type things. My wife sees the "dirt" but she doesn't understand what it will take to "clean it". I actually have the shower door off and dismantled. Oh well, what else are we men for but "slave labor".... I guess men and women are different. It wouldn't bother me that much. But she can't stand the grime. Oh well... Ya gotta love em... | | | | | |

| | I sure did. I decided to change the kitchen faucets one day because the old ones were leaking and it turned into the job from Hell. The old stuff had been on their so long, they were almost cememned together. On top of it all, I did not have the proper tools. | | | | | | |

| | Not having the proper tools does make it the job from hell. It's amazing what a difference it makes to have the right tool for the job. | | | |

| | Glad to see I'm not alone. Wow that was some "small job"... I had a similar thought today as I was scaping old caulking off of the fiberglass surround shower. "Why not just take this whole thing out and put in a tile shower." But I came to my senses. The shower isn't finished because I need some vinyl tubing that goes into these slots. | | | |

| | Good thing you came to your senses. How easy it would have been just to get out the ol' sledgehammer and crowbar and get to work. | | | |

| | It is just like a man to believe that in order for the dirt, which I would like to point out to you was post door installation, to be gotten out properly one needs to use a screwdriver and dismantle something when a simple scrub brush or toothbrush would have removed the dirt to your wife's delight. Look harder for the easy way there usually is one when your talking about dismantling something as opposed to just scrubbing it. | | | | | | |

| | Yeah, Men usually like to take things apart. An old toothbrush probably would have gotten to those hard to reach places where the door swings on the hinge. Oh well, it is all apart now. Hope I remember how to put it back together. :-[ | | | |

| | Tell me about it. My husband and I are installing new hardwood floors in our 60 year old farm house. He decided he didn't like the squeaks in the old floor so instead of going over it like everyone told him he started to tear out the old floor. 3 weeks later I have half old floor, half new sub floor (the old sub squeaked too) and no new floors. I am 5 months pregnant so there is nothing I can do without him here. | | | |

| | Oh I know how that goes. Our front door is still not finished after 2 1/2 years. The door is in there but it's bare cinder block all around it. It wiggles really easy. If I knew how to finish it I would and tell my brother where to shove it. | | | |

| | We decided to do some spring cleaning this weekend. We wanted to rearrange the kitchen cupboards. We took everything out and washed the cupboards, then the rearranging. I hate it. Theres more chaos in my kitchen now than there was before. And it took a lot longer than we expected. There are still things without a place. | | | | | | |

| | LOL. I am not mechanically inclined so all I do is minor repairs around the house. My wife has been nagging at me to remove the old moldy caulking around the tub enclosure for months. I did one edge so far as I ran out of new caulk. I'm so lazy I have yet to buy anymore. LOL. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !! | | | | | | |

| | I'm surprised that you say you are not mechanically inclined because as an ex-carnie I would think that you would need to do repairs etc. around the carnival site and the equipment. That is interesting to me. | | | |

| | Yes, we women are different! We can spot a speck of dirt across the room. I have the perfect solution to your "problem". Lose the shower door & replace with a shower curtain. When it gets dirty, replace it or clean in the washing machine & believe it or not you can put them in the dryer for a short time. Presto! clean!! REMEMBER: if mama ain't happy no ones happy. | | | | | | |

| | My husband decided it would be good to mend the leaking shower. So about 6 months ago he removed the tiles that were leaking and cleaned the adhesive of them all and prepared everything ready. He still hasn't stuck them back again. I would have thought that putting them back would have been easier than taking them down myself. It was an urgent job as the water was dripping through the ceiling below. We have 2 showers so i expect that the job will not be finished until the other one starts to leak ad needs repairing.... | | | | | | |

| | I've never started a home repair and didn't finish it. But growing up, I saw my dad do that a couple times. Where he lives now, he decided to put in a whirlpool tub for my mom because she has fibromyalgia and arthritis. That was 4 years ago. Now I grant you, the tub is IN, but we currently have a plastic bag around where the faucet is supposed to be. He just has never got around to finishing it, or having someone else finish. Luckily, their house has TWO bathrooms. : ) | | | | | | |

| | The saga continues. If you read above, I started this project on Sunday morning. By about 2:00pm I had the shower door off. I was trying to clean the grime out of a little groove where a rubber gasket fits in to seal the door. Finally I decided that I couldn't clean that without removing the gasket and I thought I should be able to get the same time of gasket form a local hardware store. WRONG! After trips to three different stores, still no one has that type of gasket with a little lip on it that fits into a groove. Of course there is no name ont he shower anywhere that I can see. So now I'm stuck. I may just have to put the old gasket back in place. Hopefully it won't leak.... GRRRRRRRR I wish I never started cleaning the shower and having my wife say, "But, Dear, what about that spot there? And, you missed that gunk near the door jamb, dear.? GRRRRRRRR | | | |

| | Have to love it when you can't find the supplies. I've been there. Had a toilet that the rubber ball that closes off the drain was a weird style. We ended up having to special order them because no one sold them anymore. Thankfully they didn't charge an arm and a leg for it but they could have. | | | |
