How hard would it be............. |
| |
| For you to adapt if you had to have both of your legs taken off? How would it effect you emotionally? Would you be bitter and resentful? Would you try to find something good in it? How hard would it be on you to adapt? I was dreaming last night about my Dad, before he died, he had to have both legs taken off due to diabetes. Although he kept a pretty good spirit about it and he made jokes about it, I do know that it was hard on him, I do know that at night when he was in bed, he thought about the fact that he could not do now what he used to do, things that just came natural, I woke up this morining thinking "How would I handle it"? | | | | | |

| | I think people are able to adapt to situations that sound impossible to deal with before you are in them. With time and good help i think we can adapt to most everything - even if it is extremely hard and takes alot of effort. Loosing my legs or any part of my body has always seemed like the biggest nightmare of all to me. I think that would be the hardest of hardships for me to deal with. Just the thought of loosing a part of my body terrifies me. I really really hope i, or anyone else, will not be in this situation. If it happens I pray for strength and help to deal with it somehow. | | | | | | |

| | I think this is a very good topic because you don't know if someone on mylot is going through the same ordeal at this moment. So it is good that you brought this up. I can only imagine how difficult this would be for anyone to go through, now a days there are so many more options for people who have lost a limb/s than there was years ago. Whether they receive an artificial limb or if that is not possible they now have the ability to get an elecrtic chair/scooter to help them become mobile again. I remember my uncle back in the 60's lost a leg and back then there were no electric devices like that, he sat in a chair and never left his home again. | | | | | | |

| | I wont be able to take it. I admire and really think that those people who think of life more important then anything else, are strong beyond belief. I seen and heard of people who need amputations. But I cannot envision myself in such a predicament at all. I think most prob someone else would have made such a decision for me. I wont be strong enough to say 'please cut my legs" | | | | | | |

| | i wouldnt want this to happen to anyone, even my enemies.the pain and sufering one goes through the first part is just gigantic.the mental strength one needs to overcome this must be high.the only cure for this is time.it takes only time to heal the deepest scars and wounds.time is the best healer.i know i ll not be able to handle it but we got to face our worst fears and the truth in life.so if it has to be so then it will be so and we cant do anything else than to accept it. | | | | | | |

| | Maybe we are long lost sisters. My dad had both of his legs removed because of diabetes. His spirits were high the day of surgery and he was making jokes about getting the chain saw out. The doctor was amazed at his attitude. He was going to help us get one of the special wheelchairs for him. But the outcome wasn't that great. He developed a very bad infection, I'm guessing it was there before the surgery. He ened up having a heart attack, stroke and then he went into kidney failure. He had a DNR in place so once he slipped into a coma, nothing more was done for him. He died four days after the surgery. So between him and a friend of mine who is paralyzed from the neck down due to a diving accident, I often think about what I would do and I honestly don't know. I can only hope that I could have a positive attitude. | | | | | | |

| | I've reflected on this a number of thime. what I can guess here is obviously an intuition about what my behaviour might ever be in such a condition : I cannot give it for guaranted, but, to be honest, I think I would consider suicide. I'm not joking unfortunately. The only life I can image without my two legs it a life deprivated of one of my fundaments: movement and freedom. I should reconstruct my personality completely in order to accept and deal with the situation. I would try, but I douubt I would make it. Every time I try to image being in a horrible condition, I discocver this kind of negative radicalism inside of my self, and I draw some bad conclusion concerning myself. but this is the honest answer I can give you | | | | | | |
