I was reading another topic yesterday about TV, Cartoons, and what people let their children watch. I saw a comment from a poster who said they refuse to let their children watch "Dora the Explorer" because she speaks Spanish during the cartoon. That poster's comment paraphrased was "This is a America--speak it!"
Now, have we become such a society that we cannot accept differences between people? I mean, why is America called "The Melting Pot" anyway, if we can't accept the fact that other cultures exist? That was how this country was founded, right?
Now, I understand frustrations about not being able to communicate with people that speak different languages. That's why shows like dora, dragontales, and even sesame street are so important. Children need to know that these differences exist, don't they?
I am not looking to start a who's right discussion or a racial discussion, but I would like to know how others perceive how we, as a nation, feel about different cultures.

i cant say i dont have a problem with different cultures because i do, but i believe children should be well rounded and learning a few simple words from a tv cartoon is educational, when you get into high school you have to pick a language to learn wether you ever use it again in your life or not is up to you. i do however have a problem with those who come here and take a job and they cant speak enough english for us to understand what they are saying. its ok to learn new language but i agree welcome to america now speak english.

I can understand what you are saying. It is frustrating not being able to communicate with other people. That's why learning for youngsters is so important. I think that the more they learn, the easier it will become.
Thank you very much for your response!:)

Even though I don't have kids, I think that it's great that there are shows that teach you words in another language. I'm all for kids being well rounded and trying to appreciate other cultures.
As, I said I don't have kids but I have two great god-son's. And though I do try and spoil them, I try to expose them to different things. The world is a big place for them, so I believe the more they are exposed to, the more they can appreciate.

I totally agree! The more the kids get exposed to, the more tolerant they are to others, and their differences. Thank you for your post!
