What Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwhich making rituals do you follow? |
|
I have a certain way of making a really good Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwhich.
1. I prefer to use Jam, Grape Jam, but I will use Grape Jelly.
2. I mix together equal parts Peanut Butter and Jelly. Sometimes I will use Crunchy Peanut Butter, and sometimes I will use Creamy. It's just according to how nutty I'm feeling.
3. Again, according to my mood, I like to add just a bit of honey to this mixture.
4. I mix it all until it's very smooth, then I spread this concoction on both pieces of the bread. Mind you, it's very important to spread the mix on both pieces of bread, and not just one side.
5. If I have the patience and forth thought, I like to place the sandwhich into a plastic sandwhich bag and let it sit in the sun for a few hours. This makes for a particularly yummy sandwhich.
6. Most times, I don't have the patience to wait, and I go ahead and eat the sandwhich. Of course, I also eat left over peanut butter and jelly mixture from the bowl or cup that I used to mix it in.
7. I also like to add cheese and/ or potato chips to these sandwhiches. Again, this is according to my mood at the time.
What kind of peanut butter and jelly rituals do you use?

1. buldwgz (892) | 3 years ago | I always, always put cheese on my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Often I toast the bread first, and more than not I mix the peanut butter and jelly together before spreading it on the toasted bread. I have been know to fry the sandwich too...but always, ALWAYS with cheese. Great, now I am hungry.

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | This sounds good, buldwgz. I've not tried toasting the bread.

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | It's better because there is less chance of biting into a piece of bread with no, or little, peanut butter and jelly. When the bread is spread on only once piece of bread, you run the risk of spreading too thin.
Thanks for responding, howard. When I posted this, I thought to myself, "At least howard will respond." Thanks!

Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | I should really start doing this. Considering I have PBS (Perfect Bite Syndrome), it would solve a big problem for me.

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | After having read your Discussion on PBS, Hmmmmm, I think that this would be something good for you to start.

3. Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | The only ritual I have is that I am religious about always spreading the peanut butter first. That way the peanut-buttered knife goes into the jelly/jam rather than the other way around. I don't want jelly or jam remnants in my peanut butter - it'll get moldy in my cupboard!
| |
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | I am shocked to hear this, Hmmmm. I would never - Never! - use the same knife for the peanut butter that I also use for the jelly or jam. I usually use a spoon or one of those other spatula type plastic utensils. I use one spoon for peanut butter and one spoon for jam or jelly.
Two spoons. Always.

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | Would you care to share more about PBS? I think I know what you mean, but I don't know if you are serious.
| |
|
|
Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | Actually, I use a metal spatula... Like the kind you see pharmacists use to count out pills. What's wrong with using the same utensil, anyway?
And what about Goober Grape? I used to love that stuff. Not a fan of grape jelly, but I loved how cheap-tasting the peanut butter was.
I am completely serious about PBS. Check out my discussion on it.

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | "Actually, I use a metal spatula... Like the kind you see pharmacists use to count out pills."
This sounds like a great idea. I'll have to try it.
There's nothing wrong with using one utensil, I just don't like to transfer pieces of peanut butter to the jelly, or jelly to the peanut butter jar. I know it's crazy considering that I am purposely mixing the two together in the sandwhich.
"And what about Goober Grape?"
Aah, Goober Grape. A whole other discussion, Hmmmmm. I usually am not able to use Goober Grape to make sandwhiches, because I end up eating the Goober Grape right out of the jar. As you say, it is cheap tasting. I guess that it's an acquired taste.
I will check out your PBS discussion. I suggest that you check out my discussion on drinking directly from the carton.
| |
|
|
Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | I firmly believe that Goober Grape peanut butter SHOULD be eaten directly from the jar and not spread on bread. The peanut butter reminds me of the peanut butter inside of a peanut butter cup. Lots of extra confectioner's sugar. Or just cheap. Either way, I liked it.
I responded to the carton question last night.:)

4. ratburn (527) | 3 years ago | can you believe i've never tried peanut butter and jelly sandwich? i can't imagine how it tastes like but i've always been curious. i've always wanted to make one but i don't like jelly or jam. maybe soon, i ought to try it out! i can't imagine the taste of cheese, jam and peanut butter! they don't mix. at least for me i think they don't.
| |
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | Cheese?! Ratburn, you are the goddess of cheese ice cream. I cannot imagine cheese ice cream, and you are having problems with cheese, jam, and peanut butter!
Have you ever had a peanut butter sandwhich? How about a peanut butter and banana sandwhich? My dad loves those.
A peanut butter and cheese sandwhich is also good.
My brother actually eats peanut butter and Jello sandwhiches, but I've never tried that.
| |
|
|
ratburn (527) | 3 years ago | now that i think about it, cheese ice cream and RATburn. hhmmm. i don't even love cheese. i mean i enjoy it but i'm not crazy about it.
i've tried peanut butter sandwich, in fact, i love it! i just can't imagine it with jam. what kind of jam best suits peanut butter? grape jam?
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | I prefer grape jam, but that's just me. There are all sorts of flavors available.
I can't believe you just got the cheese/RATburn connection. I tried to subtly make that connection on an earlier discussion, I do believe it was the one about cheese ice cream.:)
| |
|
|
ratburn (527) | 3 years ago | i'm just not a fan of jams. but let me try that someday, grape jam and peanut butter. who came up with peanut butter and jelly sandwich? sorry but it just seems too weird to me. perhaps because we don't have it here in my side of the world.
haha! i never really thought about it because i don't think of RATS just because of my nick. i mean i told you the story and it has nothing to do with rats. probably why i didn't see the connection!
i read somewhere you said you love eating cheese ice cream on a hot day! i really hope you can try it someday. it's not bad at all.
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | I'm glad that you saw that comment I made about loving to eat cheese ice cream on a hot day. Of course, I was just kidding, and I did it just in the hopes that you would see it!! You've just made my day, ratburn.:)
Another reason that I made that cheese ice cream comment was that I saw that the Discussion was by a guy on your side of the world, and I wondered what he would say.
| |
|
|
ratburn (527) | 3 years ago | oh yeah i noticed that he was from the same country. i didn't comment since i didn't know what to say. of course that made me smile as well! you always make me smile with your comments and discussions, transdisc! there are just some i can't seem to respond to since i don't know what to say.
i'm speechless. okay okay, only at certain times. lol.

5. stacyv81 (2666) | 3 years ago | I like toasted pbj. I like to taost the bread and put on the pb right away as it melts a little. I like a lot of peanut butter, and just enough grape jelly so that it goes down with out a fight=) That is how I like my pbj!
| |
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | This sounds like a neat idea, stacyv81. Do you prefer a toasted peanut butter sandwhich, sans jelly?
| |
|
|
stacyv81 (2666) | 3 years ago | I Like it either way, I like just a peanut butter sandwich, whether toasted or not, just as equally as a pb&J.

6. filmbuff (1338) | 3 years ago | It has been years since I made a PB and J sandwich! Judgeing from some of the other responses my methods will no doubt come off as simplistic. I use grape jelly and whatever non-ecoli-contaminated peanut butter I can find. I spread Jelly on one piece of bread, and peanut butter on the other, then place the pb covered bread onto top of the jelly covered one. Viola.

Angelwhispers (4595) | 3 years ago | LMAO rotflmao LOL is there any other way to laugh here. Filmbuff I have missed ya. And your right LMAO how else to make a PBJ? Good grief I do think sometimes our good friend is off his ever rocking porch swing:))) I hate PBJ the best way to make one is not make one. But your response here has give me the giggles. Thanks!

filmbuff (1338) | 3 years ago | Hey Angel! I've missed you guys too, just been really busy doing massive website updates. I'm trying to get over here more..really I am.:)

|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | Hey, filmbuff. Good to see you around again. I actually made it over to your website, but couldn't think of anything intelligent to say, but I'm still thinking. It's a nice site.
Of course I disagree with Angelwhisper's comment that the best way to make a PBJ is to not make one. In fact, there's really no bad way to make one, I just have a few quirks (duh) that enhance the PBJ eating experience.
When I am in a hurry and must resort to your method, I do like to cut the sandwhich in half diagonally. It's the least I can do to add that extra flair under less than perfect conditions.:)
| |
|
|
filmbuff (1338) | 3 years ago | Thanks Trans, I am trying to pull myself away from there long enough to post now and then. And I totally agree with you that if you are going to cut a sandwich, it has to be diagonally. For some reason I swear that the contents just don't fall out as much. And pooh on those people that cut the crust off, the crust is the best part!

7. Erilyn (533) | 3 years ago | I used to love goober grape when I was a kid lol. Nake pb&j sandwich, I toast my bread, butter both peices, nad then put my pb (always creamy) and usually strawberry jam on it. Sometimes I will add plain chips in there and crush them:).
Now my daughters are strange they don't eat pb&j much, they prefer to eat pb, banana, and mayonaise sandwiches. They have treid to get me to eat it one time, I just can't seem to do it. I like all 3 things just, I just can't see eating them together. The thought of eating them together makes me sick to my stomache.
| |
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | I agree that the thought of eating all three -- PB, Banana, and Mayo -- together makes me sick, too. My dad actually likes this concoction, Erilyn, although he prefers plain PB and bananas.
I have a brother who has eaten PB and Jell-O sandwhiches. He's a bit weird.
| |
|
|
Erilyn (533) | 3 years ago | Sounds like it, he and my daughters might get along lol. Another favorite concotion they have that I have actually tried is peanut butter mixed with syrup. I have to admit it is pretty good. There used to be a place you could go in the mall that made some weird pb&j mixtures. They didn't last long though. My oldest daughter remembers the place and every once in a while will say I am making a new one for the pb&j place mom. I cringe now when she says that lol.

|

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | PB and syrup? I've never heard that one, but it does make sense. I may have to try it.

8. someonesmom (2276) | 3 years ago | You really do have quite the involved PBJ ritual. I just spread the PB on one piece of bread, and then grape jelly (preferred) or strawberry or raspberry jam on the other piece ... and yes, I do use the same knife. I just make sure that I clean off the PB on the other slice of bread before I put it into the jam. I also love, PB and banana, as well as PB and honey too. This is all making me hungry for one of these, but I've just eaten a couple of hot dogs ... sigh.
| |
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | I also enjoy the PB and honey, someonesmom. It is quite yummy. While I do go to great lengths to enjoy the PB&J sandwhich, it is a rare thing, occuring only a few times a year.
Once, many years ago, I was going to a church dinner where everyone is supposed to bring a covered dish. I couldn't think of anything to bring, so I made some of my PB&J sandwhiches, cut them up, and took them, along with some boiled peanuts that I picked up on the way over.
Some of my friends laughed at me for doing this, but these sandwhiches were a Huge hit with the children (as well as with me.)
Thanks for sharing!

9. galatea (336) | 3 years ago | I only use the homemade peanut butter that could be bought in our province. It's divine. Haha. I love talking about food. Anyway, so I spread the peanut butter thickly on one piece of bread, then I grab whatever jelly or jam is available and I spread that on another piece of bread and voila! It's best went dunked in hot choco, cold milk, or milk tea. Yum!
