How to stop a dog from gathering turtles? | | Hi, We live out in the country, and we have a black lab named Luke who is about a year old and mostly stays outside. He is in a bad habit of finding and bringing box turtles up to the yard. This time of year it is rainy season, and the turtles are moving. Not only does he bring them in the yard, (which isn't such a bad thing), but he chews on them if we do not catch him right away. Besides hurting the turtles, if he gets a piece of shell swallowed, it could be bad for him. We have tried everything we can think of to discourage him. We scold, take it away, even sprayed him with water. Someone suggested putting hot sauce on the turtles back, but I'm afraid that would harm the turtle, not to mention the poor dog's mouth! So my question is has anyone dealt with something like this, or would you have a suggestion to stop it? He's a good dog, but a Lab and likes to chew and collect things, that's his nature!

He had a big Pileated Woodpecker in his mouth one day, didn't hurt it, and I don't know how he caught it, but my husband took it away, let it go, it was one mad, squawking, woodpecker!

cremechese (4503) | 3 years ago | I have to continue to follow this discussion. I had a black lab once, but I think she actually was braindamaged. She just was not smart at all & she*did* have a big bump on her head when my son found her. The only thing she could do was escape from the yard. Finally she escaped and we never did find her again. Waaa, she was a sweet dog but never retrieved a thing except some poor neighbor kid's shoe.

Heavensent53 (2615) | 3 years ago | Well, we think mystery solved! Sorry fifty, but the pepper does not work (for Luke), it doesn't bother him at all. The county extension office doesn't have a clue. Cremechese, you are the closest. He just wants to retrieve. My husband took a new approach, praising him, and take it away, releasing it, telling Luke they have to let it go. Luke is perfectly happy with this, and has stopped chewing on them. (Now he eats my tulips!) I think being so young, he has the instinct to retrieve, but doesn't know quite how to handle, so he's experimenting. No telling what he'll do next...

So I do hope that you will try this as it did work for me and it should surely work for you too.

I thought box turtles were snappers. Am I wrong?

Heavensent53 (2615) | 3 years ago | This is why I asked the whole world a silly question, (light bulb moment!!!!:) I should have thought of that!! What a great Idea, thanks so much! As far as snapping turtles, no, there is a difference, but I do think the little "taripines" (box turtles, as we call them) will bite if aggressive, I've heard the males (with red eyes) are more aggressive. Mostly they put their head & body in their shell to escape danger. That doesn't stop Luke though.

If your dog has swallowed a turtle than this is what you can do --> Turtles carry samonella, I would worry. Get her into the vet asap. She could get very sick and pass it off to you in her feces/ and saliva. Salmonellosis is well recognized as a zoonosis associated with many species of reptiles. In the 1970s, it was estimated that 280,000 human cases of salmonellosis/year were associated with reptiles, leading to the ban on turtles with carapace lenghts< 4 inches (i.e. would fit in a child's mouth). This led to a substantial reduction in pediatric cases of salmonellosis, but a recent study has suggested that 6% of all sporadic human cases of Salmonella infection are still associated with reptiles .
My guess is that she'll be ok. My dogs have eaten: bunnies, rats, squirrels and pretty much any other critter they can catch. They are healthy as can be. Just make sure her shots are up to date. If you see any signs of her being ill take her to the vet. Other than that, undertstand that she's a dog and has an instict to chase/kill prey.

Heavensent53 (2615) | 3 years ago | Thank you for all this info, that I did not think about either! Now I know we need to keep him from the turtles. I know dogs will eat a lot of nasty stuff, but I was thinking about the shell puncturing his intestines. I knew about reptiles carrying Salmonella, but had forgotten.

I love labs, and had one, 2, no, I think it was 3 different labs growing up. Each one was as gentle as a lamb, and my best friend. This discussion brought back some happy memories for me, so thank you! Good luck with keeping him away from those turtles. For some reason they would be so easy to catch. (I had one bite the worm off my fishing line, when I was 5 or 6 years old!) My dad put the little guy (Fred) in a bucket, and we kept him for about a week. Then we took him back to the river. I was so sad.:( I am sure he was happier there, though.

Heavensent53 (2615) | 3 years ago | Ha-ha, you're my kind of person, creematee! Anybody who'd name a turtle, is alright by me!:) He is a very good and loyal dog! He was dumped (or wandered)... we never could find out his story. He was skin & bones, bad shape, almost starved to death. We felt so sorry, got him vet care, and he will never go through that again. Now he's this HUGE lunk that appreciates his home, you can tell, his whole life is centered around being with us.

I would try and give the turtles away to a zoo. The turtles are going to get bigger and out live you and your Labrador.

Heavensent53 (2615) | 3 years ago | Thanks for your reply! These are common little turtles that live here, (all over US), the zoo would not take them. This is mating season for these turtles, and they travel for miles, looking for "that special someone"!:)
