A Question about The Departed -- * Extreme Spoiler Alert * |
| |
| Okay, so I'm a bit dense, but I'm wondering about the ending of, The Departed. When Mark Wahlberg shot Matt Damon, was this simply revenge for the Martin Sheen character and all that happened, or was Wahlberg also a Rat in the Deparment? | | | | | |

| | He's doing it for revenge. Please do go and check out the original movie, Infernal Affairs from Hong Kong. In my opinion, it is better :D | | | | | | |

| | Thanks, I didn't even know that movie existed. Are you making your suggestion based on seeing Infernal Affairs, or is it a deduction you made from watching The Departed, or is there some other reason you know this, valerfore? Thanks for responding, and welcome to myLot. :+) | | | |

| | I'm checking that movie out... on netflix! thanks for the idea. I find that almost all originals are better than the remakes, especially ones that are taken from another culture. | | | |

| | I based my comment on the Departed. Mark Walberg's character wasn't in the original, but I do think its a great addition :D I watched Infernal Affairs first before Departed. Unlike other remakes, I think the Departed did a great job, though I still prefer the original. :p | | | |

| | Thanks for the clarification, valefore. I thought it was revenge, but I also thought that it was open to the other possibility, especially with the rat running along the rail at the very end. Thanks, valefore. I hope to look up Infernal Affairs, too. :+) | | | |

| | I think the only conclusion you can come to is that he killed him because he was a rat, and Mark Wahlberg figured it out. I really didn't see any evidence that would suggest Mark Wahlberg was another rat, so... | | | | | | |

| | I don't think that this is the only conclusion that can be reached, MrNiceGuy, but I do appreciate your response. Most people will probably agree with you, and it seems like the answer, but I wondered if Scorcese had implemented yet another twist into the film. While there may not be any evidence in the body of the film to support Wahlberg as the rat, the closing scene, with the rat running along the rail, could be interepreted as a parting shot regarding Wahlberg. | | | |

| | It could be, but since there is literally NO evidence to support that theory, I assume it isn't a good one. I saw the rat as simply a symbolic closing scene or having to do with Matt Damon (the obvious rat) being killed and the sudden appearance of a symbolic rat. | | | |

| | after seeing this discussion, i watched The Departed. i also was able to watch Infernal Affairs, from Hong Kong, which is said to be the original. I never really understood fully the Hong Kong version because there were no subtitles. it was just in Mandarin. The Departed is a nice movie but i got confused in the end. there were just so many rats. i don't know which is which. i don't understand how Jack Nicholson was an FBI informant and why Matt Damon killed him. it just got so complicated i didn't get to follow. haha. So i also have no idea why Mark Wahlberg shot Matt Damon. i think it was just for revenge. wahlberg probably found out Damon was really the rat. if wahlberg is also a rat, then i'm so much more lost. LOL. | | | | | | |

| | Hey ratburn. I think that Nicholson was simply an FBI informant, and the movie talked about it and it was true, but the movie didn't really elaborate on how he informed. I think that Matt Damon killed him for a couple of reasons. One, he didn't like the idea that Nicholson was an FBI informant, and he felt threatened by what that mean to him (no trust) and so he took the opportunity to get rid of him when he came. Another reason (linked to the first) was that he simply took the opportunity, when he had it, to get rid of Nicholson, knowing that he could take Nicholson's place. I believe that the prevalent thought is that Wahlberg killed Damon for revenge (dare I say justice?) I just wondered if there was yet another twist presented by the director. I figured a film buff might know this sort of thing. That stinks about watching Infernal Affairs in Mandarin, with no subtitles. In some USA DVD's in films that were not made in English, there is an option in the setup menu that will show the film in English. Good to hear from you ratburn! I would have thought you, of all people, would like a film with rats!! :+) | | | |

| | Crips that movie made me sick literally to my stomach when Leonardo's character got shot like that after all he had been through. Oh I believe it was purely revenge, man he had it coming. The whole thing about Jack Nicholson's character being an fbi informant confused me, I do not think they did a good job at explaining what that was all about. | | | | | | |

| | Hello Angelwhispers, and thanks for responding to my Discussion. There were so gruesome scenes in that movie. I agree that I can see the revenge motive, and that is expected, but, like you, there seemed to be some confusion as to some aspects of the movie, and I wondered if there was supposed to be a deeper meaning, or if it was just revenge. I know that MrNiceGuys is adament that there is no evidence to support my wonderings, but I also think that there isn't evidence against those wonderings. With the continual plot changes throughout the movie, what's one more jab at the end? Thanks, Angelwhispers. :+) | | | |

| | Hey, ArsonCuff, you bring out some excellent points that I hadn't put in perspective. I forgot about Leo (duh) and Mark's knowledge of Leo's ID, and I also forgot about the envelope. When I read your response, it was like, "Oh yeah..." for me. Thanks, ArsonCuff. You didn't just tell me that I was wrong, but you showed me how I was wrong. Thanks. | | | |
