Payments are made by enterprises on opensource softwares for support,packaging and reliablility.Enterprises inturn use it for commercial applications.
Some Software vendors maintain a scaleddown opensource free version of their product to woo customers to buy their more complex and advanced paid proprietory products.

This is a site about that which you sepak. I am not sure what is is and if it has any value to me. Seems anything that is freely shared would be a good thing for folks to use. As long as it is not adjustable like Wikepedia for then the accuracy is reduced and difficulty raised. Good luck with this.

For example you wont get cross over office or transgamer cedega for free even though both are open source. Similarly can you get a copy of Xandros OS for free? Two years back Suse was not available without paying them. So the actual meaning of Open source is not on the price of the software but the user got the right to modify and distribute the software.

I would like to know if its possible to compile the freely available source code of Xandros into executable oneself.

There are many other like Linspire, Novel's SELD, Red Hat Enterprise Edition, Mandriva Business Edition etc . Xandros may contain closed softwares like acrobat reader, flash etc and drivers. Thats why there are not said to be 100% open source distribution. But if we just take the OS without the softwares it caries Xandros is 100% open source. You even gave the link of their source code which can be downloaded. That itself shows xandros is open source. You can download and compile the distros code but let me tell you that is not an easy task. You should be familiar with linux kernel and other technical stuff. Not only that it requires a very good system to compile the whole code. In short it wont be an easy task for a single person to compile the complete distro. | |

But is a sound business model possible for commercial personal versions.I strongly dont think.
Commercial enterprise versions cater to a different market and have already acquired a marketshare.
It still will be easy for a skilled tech community to download the xandros source compile and redistribute it illegaly with much ease without paying a single cent unless Xandros withhelds some important information from its sourcecode. | |

It is free, which is more than I can say for the other one.
