JIMI HENDRIX - In some magazins he´s mentioned as the worlds best guitarist ever |
| |
| So I know there are some discussions about him here but let´s really discuss about that person. I allways remember back when listening him the first time in the movie documention about the Woodstock-festival in 1969. Specialy at the end of his set he plays a mellow minor bluesy tune called Villanova Junction which I never get out of my head. It belongs to the a few improvisations that have touched me so deeply. Besides I know a lot people don´t know that he also was a great blues player as heard in some of his compositions like for example Red House Blues or his version from Bleeding Heart by Elmore James. He was not only a great composer also his lyrics had a strong message. Though Hendrix wasn´t political active he made comments on the Black Panthers in tv shows also that he had given contributions to them. I read up that he was put on the safety index from the FBI and his death is still under a veil. So what do you know do you have some secret facts to share? what´s so unique on him? which group line up do you like the most? did someone here see him at woodstock? Do you think he was that much depressed to really do suicide? www.youtube.com/watch?v=2S9nteF644A Villanove Junction starts at 1:17 min. | | | | | |

| | he didn't die from a drugoverdose, he took beer and some sleeping pills that have lethal effect together. He most likely didn't know about this and it wasn' a suicide. | | | |

| | A black Rock N Roll guitarist wasn't a huge thing, seeing Rock n Roll came from Black music, Chuck Berry was playing rock n roll guitar 10 years before Hendrix, so I don't really understand your statement here. This doesn't take away the fact that Hendrix was one amazing player. But I have to question this "Greatest" guitarist ever statement, there are so many different styles out there & many less known guitarists from way back that pull stuff off that I've never heard Hendrix come close too, but that's just down to style, I think guitarists should be rated on individuality, which is why Hendrix shines. | | | |

| | Yes Jason your right there where black guitarists befor Hendrix came. I just think the unique thing about Hendrix was that as like other players in rock he had listened to blues guitarists and you can hear those influences in his playing. But he took his playing far out and he had no one to influence him on his style he came up with, so he really had a vision also i think he was real good in geting out those sounds on his guitar that were in his mind. Like musicians today have a lot players to learn from Hendrix didn´t have that, so to me he was very pure, a original to say and his influence is nearly in every guitar player if it´s rock or what ever. | | | |

| | Jimi Hendrix was one of the most amazing musicians ever. I love Villanova Junction and I love the Woodstock Improvisation that came before it. I have Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock on DVD and it still amazes me any time I watch it. I'm too young to have seen it in person, I was born 6 years after he died. Like you said, he wasn't just a great guitar player, he was a great songwriter. Some of his songs are better than anything The Beatles wrote. Like Ravenlady said, he didn't commit suicide. He took some sleeping pills so he could sleep and get up the next day and play a gig. Unfortunately he took too many and choked on his vomit. As for facts about him, I'm not sure if you know this but apparently he was kidnapped and held prisoner for a couple of days in 1969. It's suspected his manager was involved because of some financial troubles Jimi was having. Oh, and Jimi's grandmother once said something like "I've seen everything in my life, I've seen slavery and I've seen Jimi Hendrix play". | | | | | | |

| | I don´t have Hendrix at Woodstock on DVD but I saw it in our small local theatre and just this week they brought it up again in TV so I watched it again, yeah it´s really great though to me it seems Hendrix sometimes looks a little dissapointed on the group not playing that tight. I like that part when he comes out from Purple Haze and dives into his improvisation specialy that one part where he uses rapid picking, bends the note and increases the treble with Wah effect... WOW.. that sounds so awesome still today. I have Band Of Gypsys at Fillmore on DVD that´s also great to watch & listen, I really like the Hendrix period with the Band Of Gyspys. Yes i read an article where that kidnapping was mentioned, even it said Jimi thought his own manager would be behind it by he wasn´t happy about the musical direction Jimi wanted to take on, so kind of fear effect. About his death I don´t really know what to think it´s said that some say he still had live in his body when he was transported out of the appartment to the hospital, other´s deny that. A big amount of red wine was found in his lungs by the doctor, in a other book it´s said that he maybe was forced on the alcohol. Well someone must know the truth.... thank you for your lines crispeater. | | | |

| | As a guitarist, he was practically a pioneer in that his music was VERY different. Many tried to play like him, but it just wasn't the same. Many guitarists who have gained fame, & even those who have not made it big, when they are asked what previous guitarists have inspired them or had an influence in their own music, Jimi Hendrix is quite often named. I am sure if it was not for him, many other artists, whether they're good or not very good, would not have been heard of. | | | | | | |

| | as far as being rated...lol...well maybe we should rate the magazines...you know...they just have to sensationalize things to make sells..!! he was incredible...his voice..his melodies...and he was a good writer too,it's a shame we lost him so soon..! there are so many things, good things to say about him and his music,i was in 10th grade algerbra class when my friend "meets" came into class ,right after the late bell, with a transistor radio to his ear...telling me,hey, hey, your buddy hendrix just died...i laughed and said your a jerk man, cause he always liked to play pranks...and he said,"no,no,they said he died"..i took the radio and sure enough..he died...a part of me died too.! the era...was,..what set the mood..."rocknroll was" changing...and so were the times...and the "war" was the big talk of the town..and these bands were against the establishment and their war..and they empowered the masses through their music(to revolt)..man it was scary...but it was incredible...and they were all warriors against the establishment and their war(for profit)...and HENDRIX was also out there too.. in the front lines, they were at times..unstoppable and so powerful...they did scare the powers that be...people everywhere..just,out right, did exactly opposite of what the government wanted..i remember watching them burn their draft cards in front of the police and getting arrested on the spot.. KENT STATE UNIVERSITY had the national guard called out, because of a .."sit in"...,to protest the war...and they shot and killed 6 students when things got a little rough...! "sit ins" ...were common to promote peace and to protest the war...and they were going on all over the country...and these bands were the catalyst for the empowerment..it goes back to a long line of performers against the big corporations...people like WOODY GUTHERIE,who was very out spoken against these companies, during the grest depression,PETE SEEGER is another folk singer who disliked the way companies were treating people...and don't forget BOB DYLAN...who was said to be at WOODY GUTHERIE'S death bed...i read where WOODY was 1 of DYLANS' role models...so you see this music...this movement of fighting unfair treatment to the the masses goes way back in this country..! and by the way...BOB DYLAN was 1 HENDRIXS' role models..! "POWER TO THE PEOPLE"... those bands and the people of those days are still my heroes...! | | | |

| | Sorry I haven´t look back on this for a longer time so I guess I´m a little late. Well first of all thanks for your lines you´ve written and also writing something personal I appriciate that. Yeah.. I agree with your words about Jimi Hendrix and all you´ve put up here. Like A Rolling Stone is definitely a very nice cover of Dylan´s music I like that one too also I really love his version from All Along The Watchtower his playing has so many facets in it. I´ve seen that version from Johnny Be Goode on a video tape some years ago must be around somewhere in the appartment, I forgot which concert it was but he also played Hear My Train A Comming that´s a great tune, specialy the very slow version he plays of it in that concert I have to look for that tape. Yes the Woodstock instrumental that was the first I got to hear from him after I bought that 3 record set. Allways like to hear that tune Villanova Junction it´s so expressiv and goes under the skin. What a great musician he was sadly he couldn´t go any further. To come to an end I say I didn´t grew up with them since I was born in 1969 but I mostly like a lot of groups back from the 60/70´s, I started listening them when I was age 16. Thanks again farmboss1 for your nice post I´ll give you best response you really deserve it. +) | | | |

| | i think that while jimi hendrix might not be the worlds greatest guitarist ever but i am sure he deserves to fall into the upper echelons of guitar players... be it his studio albums, or the minblowing live performance at woodstock '69... he always sunds good. add to all those are his lesser known numbers which capture the blues music that he also played. also the fact that his covers (like that of all along the watchtower) are testimony to the fact that the man was one of the most creative and influential guitarists.... is he the worlds best ever?? i cant say.. but he is definitely one of the best without doubt | | | | | | |
